I prefer the Mariner. I've cruised on that ship before and have another cruise on the mariner when they relocate to the west coast. The ship is beautiful and the staff is great. They don't have a water slide but they do have an ice skating rink, which is something most ships don't have. They also have a rock climbing wall, miniature golf course, in line skating area, an arcade and a basketball court. They also offer tons of activities.

younger ppl tend to go for the Carnival cruises (usually because they're cheaper)

TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
I have been on the Mariner but not the Carnival Splendor. But I think that regardless of the water slide, the Mariner has much more to offer. Here's a link to a virtual tour of the ship so you can look for yourself: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruise/ships/class/ship/home.do;jsessionid=0000YiKj9GPNbhhDUErHW909M18:12hdhuaq2?br=R&shipClassCode=VY&shipCode=MA

The Mariner has the rock climbing wall, free ice skating and a roller blade track, a basketball court, mini-golf, a video arcade (you have to pay to play), a great free ice show, a pedestrian mall down its center where there is free pizza and other foods 24/7, Adventure Ocean® youth facilities, including teen-only areas, Fuel and Living Room that are open until 2:00 AM every day.

So you will not miss the water slide at all.

I did the Mariner last year. It was AMAZING! I highly recommend it. There is a lot of great food, the staff was incredibly kind, and the ice shows were sooo funny! It was the best cruise I've been on (although I've only been on three, four this February). The dining room is great and there is a statue of the Von Trapp's from the Sound of Music at the top of the stairs. They were good with their shows in the dining room too. I especially liked the Promenade. It was great. My dad and I did a lot of the trivia games, which were extremely fun. If you go to Portofino's ($20 extra / meal / person) you will be very satisfied. The pools were great, there were a lot of great tanning spots, the room service is great (and included) and it's just all around amazing! I hope you take this into great consideration, and you could always go on the Carnival one next year! I've been on 2 Carnivals and 1 Royal Caribbean, the RC definitely being the best. Good luck!
