TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
|
I have cruised the Mediterranean twice and can give you some advice based on my experiences.
Well first of all you need to know that all of the cruise lines price their cruise based on "double occupancy", meaning two people per cabin. So if you plan to go alone, which you can do, they will charge you a "single supplement" to have the cabin by yourself. The single supplement mean that they will essentially charge you for two people; double the fare for whatever type cabin/accommodations you select.
So you should consider some options for someone else to go along with you since you will be paying for it anyway. One option would be to find a friend or relative, i.e. an aunt, great aunt, or someone's daughter or sister to go along and either pay all of that person's fare, or a good portion of it. If you decide to go alone then book the cheapest cabin on the ship.
Mediterranean cruises can be between 7, and 12 days and the price will depend mostly on how many days your cruise is and also on the type cabin/accommodations that you choose.
There are 4 basic types of cabins on ships;
- inside (no window),................................... least expensive
- outside (a window or porthole),
- balcony/veranda, and
- suites and penthouses.......................... most expensive.
The "FROM" prices you see will always be for an inside cabin.
You can take cruises to the countries you want to see from a variety of ports, some round trip (like depart from and return to Barcelona, Spain) and some are one way. Some cruises are 7 days and others are 12 days. If you want to see and enjoy the most countries you probably need to take a 12 day cruise.
You will get the best price by doing two things (1) book very early, like about now for next year this time or later; and (2) look at all of the cruises itinerary and date options and go when the price is lowest instead of picking a firm date and then looking for a cruise on that date
I have cruise on 4 cruise lines, Celebrity, Princess, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. My recommendation to you would be to select a cruise on Celebrity, Princess or Royal Caribbean. I did two of my European cruises on Celebrity and Royal Caribbean and they do have great cruises and ships. The ships that Royal Caribbean uses for the Mediterranean, the Brilliance of the Seas and the Voyager of the seas, are both lovely ships. I cruised the Med for 12 days on the Brilliance and I have been on two of the twin sisters of the Voyager.
I did my first Mediterranean cruise on the Royal Caribbean ship, Brilliance of the Seas. It was 12 days and went to Florence/Pisa, Rome, Nice, Naples, Santorini, Mykonos, Athens and Ephesus. That's the cruise that I recommend. On it you will get to see the Leaning Tower in Pisa, Rome's Vatican City and more, Pompeii, the Acropolis in Athens, the biblical city in Ephesus, and the beautiful Greek Isles of Mykonos and Santorini. |

i would spend time on cruise sites like cruisecritic.com and find out more about royal carribean, holland america, princess, and celebrity ships and what people like and dislike about their mediterranean tours.
think about if you can get a friend to travel with you so you don't have to pay the single suppliments cruise lines charge. (those are pretty steep)
good luck |

Royal Caribbean has a nice Mediterranean cruise. The ships are nice. There would not be a lot of kids onboard and the itineraries are very nice. There is a lot to do onboard and they have activities for singles onboard. The Brilliance of the Seas is a ship that does a 12 Night Med cruise out of Barcelona Spain and stops in places such as Cannes France, Rome, Naples and Venice, etc. The Splendour of the Seas does a 7 night Med cruise and goes to Nice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Sicily, etc. and the cruise also starts in Barcelona. Therefore, for either of these cruises you would be flying to Barcelona. Hope this helps. |

There are no party ships in the Med. Partiers don't have the money to go to the Med.. partiers go to Florida.
Every Med cruise is going to be quiet compared to the Florida port cruises. Even Carnival becomes mellow in the Med.
If you are travelling alone, you should consider using one of the cruise lines that offer a single rate. See http://tinyurl.com/SinglesTrips |

First you must know that when you cruise alone, you pay about double for a single person. It would be better if you found a person to cruise with, but I have seen single people cruise. They also have single cruises too. Now as far as going on a cruise to the Mediterranean, most will start in Spain, or Venece and then go to Italy, Greece, Rome, etc. The one I took started in Barcelona, Spain and it was wonderful. This was on a princes cruise. It was not a party ship at all, but was a very classy cruise.Mostly sofisicated people were on this cruise. So I think you would do well to check out Princess cruises. |
