I'm so sorry about your mother. But if you want to take a relaxing cruise I recommend a Holland American Line cruise to the Caribbean! A relaxing and fun way to get away and forget about your worries. Have fun!

I'm sorry about your mother. I lost my son six years ago and we decided to get away from tradition for the first Christmas without him and my husband and I took our kids to a casino for Christmas. It sounds crazy to bring kids to a casino, but there was so much to do, it really was exciting for them. For me, I could not escape how much I missed my son and how much I know he would have enjoyed this trip with us.

No matter where you go, your loss will go with you. It may help you to include your mom in some of your vacation plans, like toasting to her memory and laughing at what she would have enjoyed from the trip and what she would have hated.

A trip I recommend is Curacao. It is located next to Aruba, but not as touristy. Beautiful location with plenty to see and do.

I recommend Cape Town, South Africa. You need something different. Depending on budget/time you can combine this with a trip to Johannesburg and the Krugerpark for som wildlife.

But Cape Town alone has everything for a great vacation. It's summertime in Dec/Jan. There are beaches, wine tasting, history, seals, mountains, beatiful landscape in addition to great wine and food.

Please e-mail me for further tips if you do decide on this. There are also many South Africans on this forum that can assist.

Virginia, my wife and I took a cruise on Holland America on Christmas and we had a ball. The ship serves food around the clock, has interesting things to do on board, and offers tours ashore. We went from Ft. Lauderdale to the eastern Caribbean-Holland America's cay, St. Thomas, St. Croix, and Nassau and back to Ft. Lauderdale.

If I were you, I would check out their web site (www.holland-america.com) for the itineraries and ships. I also suggest that you get an inside room for you and a veranda suite for your dad. This will give both of you privacy, and a room with a veranda where you two can sit outside and enjoy the sea view. Their web site allows you to pick out your rooms, and see them virtually.

If you imbibe, then the Nassau port offers great prices on liquor. There is a shop right across the highway from the quay that offers Gran Marnie for about $25/bottle. Costs over $50 here in the states. They will deliver it to the ship for you.

The food is great and the service is great.

I wish you well, and morn the loss of your mom.

Regards,
Dan
