My fiance has a felony. Can he still get a passport? |
We've been planning to go on a cruise for a few months now. The cruise wouldn't be for another year. He has a felony conviction for drugs in the state of Ohio. Does he even need a passport to go on a cruise? Or can he even get one? Additional Details Thanks guys! The conviction happened quite a few years ago when he was 18. He just was hanging out with the wrong crowd and got himself in trouble. He's not on parole or anything like that, so hopefully they'll give him a passport. We are wanting to do a 10-14 day cruise to the southern caribbean like Aruba and Brazil. |

Yes he can indeed get a passport. If he is still on parole at the time of the cruise, he should ask his parole officer for permission to leave the state. There is a simple form to fill out and that is it. Everyone will need a passport by June 2009 for all travel out of the U.S. including to Canada and Mexico. Most cruise lines request a passport now, but all will tell you that you need one by June, 2009. Another thing he may someday look into is getting his felony reduced to a misdemeanor. That is often very possible to do. |

"That Guy" is completely wrong...and gives no documentation for what he states. A felony conviction will not prevent a person from getting a passport. Owing back child support will. See 1st site below. Passports will not be needed for sea travel until June1, 2009, AND, even after that, cruises to Mexico and the Caribbean region, that begin and end in the same U.S. port will be exempt from the passport requirement. See 2nd site. Some cruise lines prefer for passengers to have passports, so call and ask their policy. |

That will not hinder him at all.
Child support issues will . |

he can get a passport and its up to the passport agency discretion to issue it or not.. as for cruise ships we had passports to travel to the bahamas..i think mexico they are carefree but homeland is tightening down on this |

It will not prevent getting a passport but it may restrict him from entering some countries such as Canada.

If he is not on parole, he can get a passport. If he is on parole, he probably can get a passport but using it might be a violation of the parole conditions. Turning it around, he usually does not need a passport to get on a cruise but he might need one if he intends to leave the ship and visit a port so you probably could say that he needs one. Note that the countries that require visa's may deny his application AND being that it was a drug conviction, the U.S. customs will give him a rather through inspection, especially if you are going to visit an area of high drug trading. So I would pack separately and don't give the impression that you two are together. Don't either of you buy anything you think might be a problem. |

Depends on where you're cruising to. But his felony conviction will not prevent him from getting a passport. |

Yes, you now need a passport to go on any cruise. And no, he will not be able to get a passport if he is, in fact, a convicted felon. He will never be able to leave the country, until this gets resolved. |
