I am in my 60's and the cruises that I recommend for them would be (1) the Mediterranean, (2) the Panama Canal (3) Alaska; in that order.
A 12 day Mediterranean cruise would give them a great cruise to many historical places like the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, and Coliseum in Rome, Pompeii in Naples, the Tower of Pisa and Florence, the Acropolis in Athens, and the biblical city of Ephesus in Turkey. This was/is my all time favorite cruise; did it on a RC ship.
A cruise that includes the Panama Canal would give them some time in warm weather in the Caribbean. The cruise will probably stop in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jamaica also. But while all of the Caribbean islands are fun and have a lot to offer many are very much alike. But, there is only one Panama canal and its an experience by itself. We did this cruise on a Princess ship.
A cruise to Alaska is great fun, especially for someone who has not cruised before or is leary of getting sea sick. The cruise would go through the inside passage which means that it is not in the open water of the Pacific and thus there is less motion of the ship. Alaska provides the opportunity for great scenery and for some wildlife viewing. If they decide on Alaska, I recommend the Alaska cruise-tours offered by Royal Caribbean, Princess and Holland America. These cruise tours allow passengers to pick itineraries that add 2 to 5 days to the cruise by going overland from Anchorage all the way to Fairbanks, Alaska. They offer stops/stay overs in a couple places including Denali National Park. RC and Princess have special train cars for their tours. We did our's with Princess and it was great.
The best time to go is when you can get the best price. The Alaska cruise season is from May to Sept. The weather is generally warmer in June, July and Aug, but it can also be pleasant in May and Sept. While the best prices will be in May and Sept but you will see the same things as other times. The port stops will be the same but may be in a different order. Some cruises ship itineraries are run in reverse order, North to South vs starting in Seattle or Vancouver. Check the cruise line web sites for variations by date, itinerary and price.
Regardless of what itinerary I suggest the Royal Caribbean, Princess, Celebrity and Holland America cruise lines. These are all good lines that cater to a mature crowd. |

Royal Carribrean, it's a very mellow cruise. when I went on it I mostly saw older people and a lot of families. |

I would suggest they travel on Celebrity line. Very nice ships and very gracious service. Lots to do but no pressure to do anything.
Have them get a cabin with a balcony. It is better than the outside cabin, which is pretty good. Do not have your parents get an inside cabin to save a couple of bucks. It is like being in a closet.
The Western Caribbean is a good trip to take. The Eastern Caribbean is also very nice. |

A river cruise in Europe is ideal. My husband and I are in that age group and we took the Viking Cruise Line from Budapest to Vienna last year and truly enjoyed it. All of the shore excursions were included. We made a lot of friends our age and brought back tons of wonderful photos and memories. |

I highly recommend Holland America. The food is 5 star and so is the service. They are geared to an older crowd. The shows are wonderful and the cocktail lounges and bars are fabulous. That doesn't mean it's a bunch of old fogies, these people are having fun ! There is a circle Hawaii cruise that is 17 days round trip from LA or San Diego. It does 4 islands and 5 ports. There is the Alaska inside passage cruise. This one has just the cruise or land and rail with it. I have been on both of these with Holland America and several others. These two were my favorites. I was in my 40s and 50s. |

Norwegian Cruise Line offers some nice relaxing cruises if that is their style. Carnival was really nice, but there are a lot of kids (again, I don't know what your parents like or don't like for vacations). Also, that would depend on what location would suit their style: Alaska, Mexican Riviera, Bahamas, Europe...there's even an NCL cruise that is a one-way trip from Vancouver, BC to Los Angeles. |

Holland America's cruise to Russia, Holland, and Scandanavia is fabulous.
If you want a less expensive cruise, Royal Caribbeans ships have many activities. Book one to the Carib. or Bermuda. |
