Technicially, you don't necessary have to fly if you want to go on a cruise, but it could be a really long drive or bus ride or train ride - to get to the nearest port. Flying is much more efficient. Many people are afraid of flying and many people do it anyway. You can get a script from your doctor, or you can just take a couple of benedryl before you get on the plane. Try and sleep through the flight if possible. The last time I flew out of the country I had an early flight and I'd stayed up all night getting ready (and I was afraid to oversleep). Once I got on the plane I was out. Seriously, the last thing I remember was the plane getting into position and the next thing I know - we are there! Sleep if you can, it'll make it easier.
There are many good cruise lines. The prices on a lot of them will vary on what areas they are going to and how nice a cabin you get. For just general 'window shopping' I suggest going to Vacations to Go and just put in your criteria and see what is available. You'd be surprised what you find. But most importantly, follow your own interests. If you want to see pre-columbian ruins - take a Western Caribbean cruise. If you like the beach and shopping, take an Eastern Caribbean cruise. If you like nature and don't mind the cold - check out an Alaskan Cruise. There is also a whole mess of cruises in many many other places all with wonderful things to offer.
Once you start shopping around you'll notice that many of the cruise lines offer bargain prices on many of their cruises. You'll have lots of selection |

You did not say where you live but if your wife is afraid to fly then just drive to a cruise port. Cruises do not just leave from Florida or LA. You get get a cruise leaving from
- Boston
- NY City
- Philly
- Baltimore, Md
- Norfolk, Va
- Charleston, SC
- Port Canaveral
- Ft Lauderdale
- Miami
- Tampa
- Mobile, Ala
- New Orleans, La
- Galveston, Tx
- San Diego, Ca
- LA, Ca
- San Francisco, Ca., and
- Seattle, Washington
So you can drive and save not only the fear but the air fare, and hassles of flying. You can find a link to many of the cruise ports on this web page: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/customersupport/faq/subject.do;jsessionid=0000KliLHCnTq72VBohonHqhmh-:12hdhu6tq?snav=2&faqSubjectName=Directions+to+the+Pier&faqSubjectId=331&pnav=5
The budget cruise line is Carnival but you can also get good prices on Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean. All of the cruise lines have specials that will save you money and you can also save money by booking very early, like a year or more in advance.
Check out the web sites below and look for their specials. You can also search for cruises based on the departure port so you can see what cruises there are that leave from a port or ports that you can drive to. I have driven to ports in Florida many times and they have very safe parking right next to the cruise terminals.

carnival! not by much, but they are cheaper than royal caribbean. and i would only trust royal caribbean or carnival. and plane rides are nothing. its true what they say: if you are afriad of a plane, then you ought to be more scared of cars. cuz waaaaaaaaaaay more people die in car wrecks than plane crashes. dont believe it? think of this...how many people do u know PERSONALLY that were in a car crash? ok, now how many people do you know PERSONALLY that were in a plane crash? exactly! |

lol there is nothing to be afraid about flying. it is statiscally safer to be in a plane than being in your bathroom. I would recommend Royal Caribbean line - very fun line! |

I flew on a Southwest airlines plane for the first time back in April since 1995. It was slightly unsettling at first but then I was fine.
Royal Caribbean is a great cruise line. In fact, I just checked on taking a cruise again myself and they had some as low as $159 per person for a 4 day cruise to the Bahamas. This is from either Port Canaveral or Miami Florida.
I really enjoyed Royal Caribbean. All the staff were awesome. The food was great too. Yeah, the rooms are slightly small, but you are not in the rooms that much anyways unless you are homebody. There is plenty to do.
Southwest Airlines even has a package right now for people who want to cruise which includes a $150 onboard credit. |

DEFENETLY YESSSS!!! you won't regreret. The prices vary, I have cruise in Royal, Carnival, Norwagein. Carnival is the cheapest but this year I'm going to Alaska and the prices between Carnival and NCL were almost the same. To have a good price you have to book it with time. For example it's september and I already have my cruis to Alaska in june. I really hope you enjoy your vacations!!!!!!!!! |

I was a little hesitant the first time I got on a plane but I was fine. If you want a good cruise line, I highly suggest Holland America. You pay for service and quality and it's better to splurge a bit when going on a cruise. |

Planes don't scare me at all. I get more nervous in a car. Anyways you may be able to find a cruise leaving from near where you live, like California, or NYC, or Texas, or Canada. If not of course you would just have to suck up your fear of flying. Maybe even get a sedative from a doctor before you fly. My favorite cruise line is Princess. It is one of the classier cruise companies with truly beautiful ships. Go to princess.com to see all that they offer. You can even pretend to book a cruise on line. You will get prices, itineraries, and cabin types. Then when they ask for a credit card, you just stop there and back out. Anyways going to there web site will give you a good idea of what's out there. |
