Until June, technically, you do not need a passport as long as you are leaving from and returning to a US port. However, I was advised by Carnival Cruise lines that for my May cruise, I should go ahead and get one, because the government has been finicky and changed the date multiple times - better safe than sorry.
In February, I would think that you would be far enough ahead of the deadline that you shouldn't need to worry about it; however, if you find out close to your cruise that the date changed (it shouldn't but its a crazy world), it will be extremely difficult to get a passport last-minute; my aunt waited 4 months for hers, and all she did was change her name to her married name! So, it is a judgment call on your part.
After June, however, you will need a passport no matter what on a cruise - even if you are coming and going from a US port and even if its only to Mexico. This will be a brand new policy regarding cruising. |

If you are leaving or arriving from the US and will only go to foreign ports in North America and there are no planes involved leaving or arriving in the US then no until about June. It is highly advisable. In an emergency you will not be able to fly back to the US from a foreign port. I have seen articles about people dying in Mexico while waiting for a passport to fly home.

If the ship is leaving from your port and coming back there then you might not need one. If you are taking a plane they you will need one to leave the country as well as to enter into the other. While on the cruise you will not need one but that is providing you are cruising the Caribbean. You will only need your ship pass to enter different ports. You should get one just in case. It is better to be safe than sorry. |

If you're going to stop in another country you will need a passport (unless you want to stay on the ship). |

Youd better look at your cruise lines home page for that kind of info. Most cls requries passport or simular id but there is still exceptions. But all that info should stand on any good cruise lines home page if you look carefully.
All legal residents could get passports and multiple re entry visa (required in most cases) to us if you aply to the apropiate gouverment. its easy to aply and get so it highly recomendeble if you want to go to a foregin country. Johan |

If the cruise is to the Caribbean region and/or Mexico, passports are not needed . Passports for land and sea travel will not be needed until June 2009. Even then, cruises that begin and end in the same port in the U.S. will be exempted from the need for passports. See sites below. Now, some cruise lines like passengers to have passports, so you should call and ask their policy. |

Check with the cruise line you are travelling with. They are the only ones who can answer exactly.
Your details are not specific enough. Generally a passport is required with photo so they can confirm you who are. |

You need a passport if you go sightseeing in foreign ports. Call your travel agent. They'd know. |
