Should we get a passport for our cruise?

My husband and I are going on a western Carribean cruise in April. As of June I know you will be required to take one along, but our travel agent suggests that we still get one and those things are expensive! What do you guys think? Should we just take our birth certificates along like it's required?

Honestly it's not a bad idea to get the passport and be done with it. I know that they aren't cheap...but you can use them as identification in a lot of places; including ANY time you fly anywhere. Plus it will simply make it easier getting through customs.

Edit: When I changed my name all I had to do was send my passport with an original copy of the court order regarding the change. They didn't do a whole new passport, just made a printed notation on the inside of it indicating the name change and it didn't cost me anything.

its much better and easier to have a pass port in my opinion

it is a good idea to get one, yes.

It is really a good idea to get them. My husband and I took a few cruises before we understood how helpful they can be, especially in an emergency situation. So, we got them for our last cruise. Yes, they are not cheap, but they do last for 10 whole years and if you average that out, its only about $10 per year.

I suggest you go ahead and get passports now! They are good for 10 years, and are much safer to carry than a birth certificate! (A birth certificate is a wonderful bonus to anybody interested in identity theft, and a passport is not. In fact, a passport won't have enough information for a passport thief to get your identity or request a birth certificate.)

The new law starting in June requires a passport if you are not on a cruise that starts and ends in the same US port. It is still highly recommended that you get one. If for some reason you have to leave the cruise in the middle (accident, sickness, etc) you will not be able to fly home without one.

Don't forget that the passport is good for 10 years.

I would. If something happens and you get left at port, a passport will make it much easier to catch up with your ship. It makes it faster getting through customes.

If you don't do any flying, there is the passport card which is much cheaper. Have you looked into that?

The only reason I would not go ahead and get it is if I were changing my name soon (in process of marriage or divorce) b/c then you have to send them more money to send you a new passport with the new name.

Passports are good for 10 years though so it's really not that expensive.
