Smokers - have you ever been puffing away happily in one of the rapidly shrinking smoking areas & been abused?

verbally by an non smoker who came along and plonked themselves down in the next seat?

If so do you apologise and put it out, or give a smart answer - if so what do you say?

If you're someone who is rude to smokers, when did the Almightly give you the right to interfere with other people enjoying their legal passtime?
Additional Details
Jonno do you ski? play rugby? drink alcohol? abuse drugs? there are many people out there who make lifestyle choices that cost the NHS millions, and you're probably one of them. Would you like me to come along and heckle next time you're playing cricket?

Tell them that since you were there first you thought they were into secondary smoking. Haven't they got it all their own way now. You cant smoke in the pub or the office so non smokers shouldn't be allowed in smoking area's

D B
i do not smoke but if it had been me i would have politely pointed out that they had chosen to sit in a legally designated area and then puffed happily away.

Answer Fairy
Yes. I was at Disneyland in the designated smoking area. There was a churro stand sort of nearby. So, there I was, smoking inside the designated area, about halfway through with my cigarette.... then this lady marches up to me with two children in tow. She says, "Hey, could you get your smoke away from my children? That's really rude." So, I pointed to the "smoking area" sign, looked her right in the face and said, "Why don't you get your kids away from my smoke..." Then I blew smoke in her face. That WAS rude, but I am of the opinion that if someone calls me rude, then I might as well oblige them. She got really peeved and marched over to security. Security told her that I was inside the smoking area and that if she had a problem with it, then perhaps she should avoid the smoking areas. He even gave her a map of the park and circled the smoking areas. He winked at me. I waved. By the time she marched off in a huff, her face was purple.

I am not a rude smoker. If I see little kids coming, I hold my cigarette away until they pass. I do not smoke in restaurants, even if it is allowed. I do not do anything to offend other people. I perfectly understand their right to a smoke-free environment. No problem. But when I am corralled into a tiny box where I am trapped for the duration of my cigarette, and other people approach me and kindly inform me that smoking in bad for my health (DUH) I sweetly tell them, "Really? OMG, I had NO idea. I guess I've been living under a rock! Thank you SO much for telling me!" Then I look them in the face and tell them that it's my body, my choice and that if they really want to get on a "what's bad for you bandwagon," then they should look into the effects of aspartame (found in diet sodas), HGH and global warming.

BODGE IT AND SCARPER
I wouldn't take that from anyone, as long as you are in a designated smoking area, and I would say to that person:

'Put your bottom lip over the top of your head and swallow'.

ok, so I used to be a smoker so I see this from both sides.
People can be very rude to smokers, but if the smokers is in a designated smoking area, no one should be saying anything to them- it's their right to smoke it they choose.
In Canada there are very few places left that one can smoke indoors other than your own private residence and this includes bars. Smokers take it outside and therefore it does not affect others health.
Having said that, some smokers are incredibly rude too. I've known of people to light up in non-smokers homes and get pissy about it when they were asked to put it out.
Bottom line- everyone knows smoking is terrible for their health, but that's no reason to be disrespectful, provided the smoker is not in a non-smoking area.

i just let one go, and ask them if they profer that smell?? lol

cruise junkie
as a x smoker i see that you have the right to smoke in your smoking areas..and if you sit near the smokers you get what you deserve !!!!!!! personally I can't stand the smell and avoid the area all together...not my place to tell you it's bad for your health, or that it stinks you already know it...

Cymraes.
Yes.
Last summer I was in a pub beer garden which was the designated smoking area and a non smoker complained.
I told him he should go back indoors if he didn't like it.
We smokers are becoming the persecuted minority.

John S
personally not yet,but i am sure it will happen.smoking areas are marked, non smoking areas are marked.point it out to them, then let them get on with banning your space.

ISABELE B
tell them to pi @@ off if they do not like it go else where ,we cannot smoke indoors so leave us to the few pleasures we enjoy ..!!!

We had the right when it started costing the NHS millions of our hard earned cash. sorry, couldnt help being a bit sarky there.
but if you wanted to do the right thing, just politely point out that it is a valid smoking area and possibly point out an alternative place for them to sit. If they refuse then they are the ones being rude, not you.

I don't smoke, but I know what you mean, and it's usually a middle aged person with seriously scary hair!

There are fewer and fewer areas on a cruise ship these days where smoking is permitted, you'd think non smokers would appreciate the changes and steer well clear of smoking areas, and be thankful. But no - which only goes to show it's not so much that they want to avoid your smoke, they want to control you.

Just last month, one of those evangelical christians sat beside me while I was smoking in a smoking area. She started lecturing me about addictions and god.
I was almost finished my cigarette so I took out a new cig and lit it off the old one and cintinued to puff away. She just shook her head and walked away. I laughed to myself about that one.

no its never happened to me yet but if someone did i would just say FACE BOTHERED

Billy Budd
I haven't had that pleasure yet I'm glad to say!

I'd just like to say to Jonno that smokers pay twice as much tax on their cigs (£8 billion a year) than it costs the NHS on smoking related illnesses (£4 billion a year)
Smokers help prop up the economy!

And godschild and Cookie - Can't you see there is a touch of the Nazi in that attitude? Health fascists!

well have you ever thought that your smoking is harming my health
i know, what a concept to think about somebody other than yourself
now i don't care if you smoke but when you do it around people that don't want it, then that makes me mad
stop complaining about it

purple195
its pompous dolts like you who make the smoking ban so worthwhile

ive looked after someone 2 days before they died of lung cancer

when did the almighty give you the right to behave as you please while killing others?

i presume your name is deeply ironic

billy budd - i dont care. i am one relative lighter than i was this time last year. why should that be? just to please people like you? i really dont think so. and this rugby skiing argument is nonsense. if i go skiing i dont automatically harm someone, whereas every smoker does

squeakycheek
I dont ever abuse you smokers as was one myself BUT I get fed up with trying to get in a pub now and basically going through a smoke screen and loads of chavs. Not nice and not funny!
