Stay on Port side or Starboard side? ?

My husband and I are taking a cruise next month (my first one). We are getting a balcony room because I have a little problem with claustrophobia. Does it matter if we stay on the port side or starboard side? We are sailing from Miami to the Bahamas.

There's not really much difference.

Usually the port vs. starboard issue is only a factor in places where you'll be doing scenic cruising and will travel predominantly along a coastline on one side or the other. Some people feel this is the case on itineraries like one-way sailings in Alaska, but for most cruises, especially in the Caribbean, there isn't much scenic cruising, so the side of the ship really doesn't matter.

Instead, some things to consider are where you want to be positioned on the ship. Some people prefer mid-ship because it can be a long walk to the very ends. Mid-ship also tends to move a bit less for those with motion sickness problems. However, many ships have extra-large balconies along the aft, and these are often very desirable, because you have a lot more space to stretch out.

Other things to consider in choosing a stateroom: Adjoining rooms can sometimes be noisy, because of the connecting doors. Consider what's above and below you, because night venues like discos or theaters can be noisy as well. Some people don't like to stay by elevators because of the noise, but on the flipside this can be very convenient!

In general, however, most staterooms of the same class are basically the same. Since you're mildly claustrophobic, I would suggest trying to stay closer to a stairwell/elevator, since it can be a looooong walk down the hallway, which can feel very cramped and unsettling.

Usually when you sail out of Miami to Bahamas you want to be on the port (left) side of the ship. Because of the route the ships usually take you are usually closer to islands or land mass on this side of the ship which gives you a better visual.

starboard is the side that you come in on into port so you can see the town or city, but that the odds are , you can see something on the port side.some time it come in on the port side a well so it doen't matter.

the rooms are all the same, so it does not really matter. In some ports, if you are on port side, you will look at the ocean, and vice versa.

we have been on both sides of the ship, and saw no difference other than what you look at in port.
