Taking Toddlers on Cruises?

We are taking my 1 year old son on his first cruise at the end of the month. Any suggestions on what to do or not to do on the cruise? We are taking the granny with us so if we want to do something or vise versa. Can he get sea sick or is does he even know that the boat is moving? Feel free to send me anything. Thanks!!!

Motion sickness tends to be an inherited trait. If either of you have this issue, consider it a possibility for your son. Movement will really depend on the calmness of the ocean. Out in open waters, this will be much more noticeable.
Consider bringing items for your son to play with and also personal items. If he needs diapers, wipes, baby food, formula, etc. be sure to pack enough for him. You might also want to bring him swimming diapers if you think he will go in the pool or other water. You might also check to see if he is welcome in the pool. Many do not allow non-potty trained to enter the water and no diapers are allowed in the pool. Disney Magic has a special pool just for the little ones. Consider also the need for more clothing changes. It isn't abnormal to have a child of that age to go through more than one change of clothes in a day. Check with your cruise line to see what types of dining attire they require. Some cruises require formal clothing so you might want to know that so he can dress appropriately. Another consideration is finding out if the cruise dining room provides high chairs or a booster chair so that he can be comfortable at the table. Unless you are splurging for the most luxury of suites, your cabin will be very small and may only have a shower. You may have to get creative when it comes to bath time. Disney ships have tubs in all of their rooms.

Here is a link to a website that may offer you more information about cruising with little ones so you can prepare for your adventure. Hope it helps you.

Depends if the cruise is child orientated. Otherwise adults who took time away from their children will not appreciate listening to your baby crying. Sea sickness is a concern and so is the high rate of Respiratory ailments that the cruise ships have been suffering.Make sure you bring plenty of food and diapers.

We took our 18-month old niece on a cruise a few years ago.

Tips-
- Leave the large 4-wheel drive stroller at home. Take along a small stroller than can be collapsed easily. You will be able to maneuver much easier with the smaller unit. It will be easier to take on-shore as well.

- Backpacks are great for carrying supplies on-shore.

- Take along small Tupperware containers to get toddler snacks from the breakfast buffet.

- You should also take along your own playpen for sleeping. Although most cruise lines offer "cribs", they are old, outdated and not very clean.

- A nightlight. The cabins are wicked dark at night.

- Small, odor control trash bags for diapers.

Since toddlers arent' allowed in the pools unless they are potty trained, (not even in swim diapers) some parents bring along blow up baby tubs and use them as mini pools so the baby can cool off.

You must be very diligent on a ship with a toddler. They are quick, and there are many dangers.

As for sea sickness, it depends, some kids do, some don't. Check with your pediatrician as to how to prevent or handle it.

A 1 year old will certainly be a handful on a cruise.
