You have received several good answers. The only thing I can add is right now Princess is having a big sale. Right now they are offering 5 different cruises to the Caribbean from $499.00 each. Call 1-800-774-6237 or Princess.com. You can also stop by any AAA travel center without being a member and get free brochures any they will be glad to answer your questions.
ENJOY.

I suggest you this company. Ships are very safe and clean, food is very good, entertainment too.

Hello Claudia,

I am going on a Southern Caribbean cruise in just 5 short days, Cruise lines are notorious for hiding crime information from the police or legal authorities, well because they are international company with registries in Bahamas, and other countries, plus usually things like that happen in International Waters where US legal rules do not apply. Having said that I have never felt unsafe in any cruises that I've ever taken. Most annoyance is drunk passengers but on all my voyages, I've never had anything stolen or felt unsafe.

Cruises usually don't have too many hidden fees. Most cruise lines, other the high end such lines, will include rooms, food, tea/coffee/lemonade and entertainment. What they don't include (and this is not a hidden charges.. just not included) are any alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, bottled waters, special dining (For private dinner away from the masses), spa services, gratuities, excursions, photographs, gambling and anything else you may want to purchase on the ship.

I have gone crazy and spend over $1000 on excursions, spas and other things I wanted. Only mandatory fee is the gratuity.. usually $10 per person per day to cover Stateroom Attendant, Waiter, Assistant Waiter and head waiter. If you just eat and drink what's included and not do anything extra... you can for surely getaway with $70 per person in gratuities for a 7 day cruise.

Cruise can vary from 3 day cruise to Bahamas from Florida to 7 day cruise that is the norm to 10 to 14 day extended cruise.

Room prices varies by location and amenities. Most advertised cruise prices are inside room price. WHich is the lowest and if you don't have claustrophobia, it's the cheapest way to travel. Inside room is small and have no windows but if you only plan to use the room to sleep and change it's great.
Ocean view rooms on the outside lower decks on most ships, a little bigger in size with port hole or box window.
I usually travel in Balcony rooms because there is just something about having breakfast on the balcony looking out the vast ocean as the sun rises.
Average rule of thumb is about $100/per night per person for cruising, so for 7 night cruise, pay about $700.

Prices do not fluctuate like airfares do but they do change during the peak travel season. Spring Break, Summer (when kids are out of school), Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year cruises will be ridiculously higher than other times.

I like to travel when it's off season, where you can find cruises at just $50/night. I especially like September and October... it's technicall Hurricane season in the caribbean so the prices are realy cheap. But I don't mind the risk because unlike land travel, you are not stuck in a land in the path of a hurricane. Twice, the ship I was on cruised around the hurricane so we didn't have any problems.

There are so many options, ships, itineraries to choose from i really can't recommend a perfect cruise for you not knowing your personality and not knowing your budget. If it's your first time cruising, i would try first with a short 3-4 day cruise out of Miami or Port Canaveral to the Bahamas and stick with major cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival.

Carnival is louder and more of a party atmosphere the entire time.. but that doesn't mean Royal Caribbean is boring... i am a Platinum member of Royal Caribbean and it' is my preferred cruiseline. It balances the fun partying atmostphere with some elegance.

Majesty or Soverign of the Seas ship for Royal Caribbean will leave Miami, to CoCo Cay - private island owned by Royal Caribbean in the Bahamas, then to Nassau, Bahamas and back to Miami.. it's quick but you'll get your feet wet.

Shorter cruises are run by older and smaller ships so there will be less amenities... Longer cruises will be on these mega ships that they are building now... the ship I am going on has of course the Rock climbing wall, putt putt golf, roller blading, tennis/basketball court, movie theatre, show theatre, ICE SKATING RINK :) and more.

Hmm I think I've said enough. Write more if you have any questions.. I'll be glad to help.

Go online and google Cruises there will be a list of different cruise lines.
Enter each and they will ask a series of questions on where and when you what to cruise.
They will show you all of the cruises to eg. Carribean.and the prices for different types of rooms.
Do your home work. It should only take a couple of hours to check out every cruise offerred by every cruise line.
read all of their material, and then approach a travel agent.
The only hidden charges that I can think of are Tips for the staff-Talk to your travel agent. and the cost of drinks soft and hard.
Have the agent help with best prices Airline connections etc.
Also they SHOULD have a working knowledge of each cruise line and who they cater to.

Your travel agent will be able to sit down with you and get you on the cruise that not only is best for your checkbook but also the most enjoyable for you! A travel agent can also discuss the issues of true final cost via what is included, what is not, etc. By the way, it will cost you nothing to meet with a travel agent.

I am not a travel agent, but travel quite a bit and always go through her! She can find fares that are actually lower than advertised "specials" and most of the internet sites.

For safest cruise, I'd personally go with Disney. Avoid Carnival Cruise Lines at all cost.

As far as hidden fees, all cruise ships charge for alcohol and most (except Disney) charge if you want to drink sodas. All other food and water is free. Cruise lines also charge tips for staff that you use on the cruise (waiter, assistant waiter, cabin steward ect.). You will be given a slip of paper with recommended tipping percentages to give each cruise member the day before you disembark. There will also be a port charge, payable again at the end of the cruise.

So far they've been waived, but don't be surprised of fuel surcharges come back.

First all the big major cruise lines are equally safe. Every one has a pre cruise drill for all the passengers and yes all have more then enough life boats. None have sunk since the titanic. The ones that have sunk were small independent cruise companies. The only people that have died on a major cruise company either died from natural causes(happens pretty often as old people cruise a lot) or they jumped or fell after climbing up and then over. The only hidden fees are really not hidden at all. If you read the info the cruise company gives you, everything is spelled out, including tips, alcohol, soft drinks, and any other fees like taxes. Finally for a small budget, your best bang for the buck would be a cruise on Carnival. They may not be the fanciest, but you would still have a lot of fun. Think of Carnival as your favorite Walmart store. They have good products at great prices.
