We have booked a cruise for June with princess cruises .On the back of the brochure it says that they will aromatically take 10 dollars a day per person tip .Is this right please? |

That is correct. Some people prefer the older style method of tipping which is to give the cash directly to the staff. If that is your preference, just go down to the pursar's desk and they will have you sign a form that you do not want automatic billed tips. Then on the last night, there are envelopes available to put cash into and you give it to those that served you. |

Yes, but it is standard on ALL cruise lines to charge a gratuity fee of all passengers, even kids. The amount will vary by cruise line from $10 to $11.50 per person per day. We just did cruises on Holland America and Celebrity and the fee was $11.50 and $11.00 respectfully.
This fee covers the cabin steward, your wait staff in the main dining room and wait staff in the buffet and other areas.
Although this is automatic, if you have a problem with service in any of these areas you can go to the purser's desk and request a reduction based on the poor service and they will make adjustments. But in general you will find that all of the service personnel will bend over backwards to please you in every way and there will not be a need to ask for an adjustment. Plus, these service people get the majority of their income from these gratuities. |

Wow, bad service and still get a tip! Just off Royal Caribbean and we still filled out our tip sheet the last night of the cruise. We were able to give those who did a little more a little more. |

The main reason for the automatic tipping was the implementation of anytime dining. People have the choice of the traditional fixed time and table dining or a more flexible dine where you wish and when. Since you are always switching wait staffs the automatic tip goes into a pool for all staff members. If you cancel the automatic tip and pay cash the staff person is required to turn the money into the pool. The only way a staff member gets to keep extra cash is if you leave the automatic tipping in place.
