It was not a cruise ship in the modern sense, but was a mail carrier that also carried cargo and passengers. The modern equivalent term would be "ocean liner", which generally means a ship which carries passengers from Point A to Point B on a regular service schedule. Modern cruise ships are designed more for touring.

Yes. It was supposed to take people from southhamton to new york.

Charles C
Yes. But many cruise ships at the time also carried some cargo. Usually small lots of luxury goods.

Anja H
No, it was an Ocean liner and a Royal Mail ship.
Designed to provide transportation for Mail, Goods and people from one side of the Atlantic to the other.
A cruise ship is a ship where holidays are offered while cruising and stopping at different port.
An Ocean liner is what planes do nowadays - bring people from A to B.

The 'Titanic' was registered as a Mail Ship. The fact that there were passengers was secondary.

Yes, a luxury cruise ship. but it did also carry 3rd class passangers in the steerage, mostly Irish, who were traveling to America to start a new life. ): that's so sad cuz mostly 3rd class passangers died cuz they were teh last to get to the lifeboats. ) :
