I don't think they make stabilizers for forty foot swells. I could be wrong on this. Also, stabilizers are like wings, they only work when the craft is at cruising speeds, not when it's being tossed around by swells which cover the bow and keel the craft to forty-five plus degrees.

Also, if seas are coming over the bow, you don't want the ship to be so stable it takes on and goes underwater. It's possible the stabilizers were retracted so it would stay as much afloat as possible.

(Emailing that to my cruise ship captain brother. Thanks)

"Thanks for sending me the link to the video of the ship in a cyclone.

It looks to me like the captain had to slow the ship down in order to avoid destroying the bow or shipping too much water by the bow. When you do this, there is a cost, and that cost is rolling. Stabilizers only work when the ship is moving forward over a certain speed (in our case about 6 knots), and below that they do not help prevent rolling. Think of them as wings--if there isn't enough water moving over and under them, they won't provide lift. As this ship was very nearly hove-to (holding her course into the wind but barely moving forward), the stabilizers were not effective.

This would have been a conscious choice on the part of the captain: either take a chance of sinking by destroying the bow, or break the china (and maybe a few bones) by rolling. If the ship didn't sink and no one died, he made the right choice.

Details as conditions warrant.

It is the Pacific Star from P&O cruise lines.

TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
The ship in the YouTube is not the Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas but a much smaller ship of a European cruise line, maybe P&O. That ship was probably launched before ships were equipped with stabilizers.

I just got back from a cruise across the Pacific to Hawaii and back and we had 20 to 30 foot waves for a couple days and the ship did a lot of rocking, but not like the YouTube you cited. I was on the RC's Radiance of the Seas and it does have stabilizers, which were deployed, but the ship still rocked quite a bit. We were not in a hurricane but the winds were just below hurricane force for a day or so.

Absent the wind and waves the ship was as smooth as a ride in a car down the highway.

Dan
Jason, this is why cruise ships avoid typhoons where possible. They are uncomfortable in 40 foot waves.

Dan

This isn't any of the P&O ships.
I think it might be a ship called Olympic Voyager, you can find more information about Olympic Voyager at the link below:
