No, you don't need your passport to enter Cozumel. The Mexican authorities check your Picture ID and cruise ID in Cozumel. No passports requested.
However, if you cruise after June 1, 2009 you will need a passport to re-enter the US after you return from your cruise.
If you are not planning to travel internationally by air, the new Passport Passcard is a great option for land andtravelersllers.
It is more economical. The only drawback is if there is an emergency and you need to fly home, the Passcard is not good for intl air travel.

We just got back from Cozumel 2/8/09. The first thing, after getting our luggage, was to stand in line and show Home Land Security or Pass Ports to enter.
