Left Footed

We are taking a Caribbean cruise in Sept. on Carnival. What are the the average costs of shore excursions?

Of course, I am sure that excursions like "swimming with the dolphins" are going to cost much more than a regular tour of some place, but I just wanted to get a little idea of how much extra money we'd have to shell out if we wanted to get off the ship at all 4 ports!??

By the way, are scheduled ports of call (pending any hurricanes!!!) are Nassau, Casa Maya, Cozumel and Belize.

And I've been to cruisecritic.com which has been very helpful, but I thought I would try this question on here too and see if any of you had any helpful info.

Thanks!

Honestly, it greatly depends on what you do. A helicopter trip of the Mayan ruins will be several hundred dollars while a bus to the beach may be only $40.

We rarely take ship provided shore excursions. We've found it MUCH cheaper to either pre-book independantly before leaving or to grab a taxi upon arrival. You can save at least half on some of these things.

Carnival Cruise Lines has an entire shore excursion area ontheir website; I recommend spnding some time there to see what costs what. They don't list exact prices, but they do give you estimates so that you can get an idea.

I also urge travellers not to do 'dolphin encounters'. They are not good for the animal and some cruise lines refuse to do them because of the animal welfare issues. Boat trips are much better bets. And if they allow swimming, you never know when a dolphin may decide to join you.

Good luck and have a fun cruise! : )

In the bahamas, alot of people do diving / snorkling. A snorkle trip should be 30-40pp. Coast maya is a beach day, just jump into a cab and hit the beach. cozumel has alot to offer. You can go to a beach club which will cost 10-15 for the cab (this is for the cab, not pp). Also alot of people do scuba / snorkle trips there. A snorkle trip should be 30-40pp. The dune buggy tours are also a blast, they are a bit pricier, 90pp for the adults, not sure about the kids. In Belize, cave tubbing is popular, should cost about 70pp, also there are alot of mayan ruings, the river wallace / altun tour is popular, the lamani tour is fantastic although it is about 100pp.

I can't speak for Carnival, or for even paying for the excursions myself. I usually went with my wife's family, and they insisted on paying for everything (we went on Royal Caribbean usually).Yes, I know, I've been spoiled by such a wonderful family, and I'm not complaining one bit.

All I do know is that you can save money by booking with local companies instead, but then you take that risk that you may night get back to your ship on time. For your first cruise, I would probably suggest booking through Carnival since you are just kind of "learning the ropes". Better be safe than sorry, although it probably wouldn't be a horrible thing to be left behind in the Bahamas!!

Carnival's web site will give you some insight into costs. They range from approx $45 to $125 and more depending on the excursion.

I have heard horror stories about excursions not booked through the cruise line - Not getting what you paid for, missing the sailing, and other not nice things. But these are very much in the minority. Most are reliable.

By booking through the cruise line, it is much easier (you pay for the convienience).

Which ever way you go - Have Fun !!

they cost like $20 extra per person. your better off just reaserching the place your going to and then do it your self. its a lot cheaper that way and then you can schedule it your way. it wastes so much more time when you schedule it by the ship. just do it by yourself.

vegas
the avarege cost for excursions about 100.00

Probably way too much. I find that most of my friends say, Hey, I'm going on a cruse!! And everything is included! Then they get all surprised when they have to shell out a ton of money for their drinks and excursions.
