The "Whale-Tail" is a funnel design used on Carnival cruise ships. It is actually a Carnival Patent. The funnel hides the exhausts from the diesel engines, generators etc: They go down to the engine room.
The wings are designed to assist the flow of exhaust gases from the diesel engines, generators etc: away from and over the aft leisure decks and passengers. The funnel and wings, made from a fibre glass composite and saving a weight of 75 tonnes compared to a steel funnel, force the flow of gases to exit the funnel horizontally out over the aft of the ship above the passenger decks.
The size of the funnel depends on the size of the ship and not what it actually hides. This allows the ship designers to fit passenger amenities into the empty spaces.

Penny B
it goes straight down to the engine room.

I guess this is one reason that they call the funnel the SMOKE STACK. It goes from deck -3 to deck 13 and above.

from this site:http://www.seaview.co.uk/cruiselines/carnival/miracle.html

Nick & Nora's supper club is located at the top of a soaring atrium under a red-tinted glass dome that forms the forward portion of the Carnival Miracle's massive winged funnel.

Anthony
it is the smoke stack from the engine room

Mirielle
that's the source of the pollution
