What Clothing Is Appropriate To Wear On A Cruise? |
I am a guy in my mid-20s. I will be going on my first cruise soon. I am baffled as to what types of clothing one wears on a cruise. Must I wear a formal suit or something more casual?
Thanks

You can wear slacks or Khaki's with a shirt that has a collar for dinner. On formal nights, a suit is fine or you can eat in the buffet and forget the whole formal thing. During the day, you wear whatever you want depending on the weather. Always bring good walking shoes with you too. Most cruise companies send you booklets on what to wear, so check that out too. Always remember that whatever you wear, you will never see these people again, so let loose and wear whatever makes you happy. |

if your cruise is a 7 day one. there will be 2 nights that are "formal"
meaning you have to wear suit and a tie to dinner on those nights.
otherwise at dinner you would wear something like you would going out to dinner at home. They frown on jeans at dinner.,
have a great cruise

You should get something from the company before you go. Each ship is different.
Some require DJ on one or two nights, some request at least a lounge suit on these nights. Some ask for jacket and tie at dinner. Some just say no T-shirts or short-sleeved shirts.
As for on deck, remember.....it's always windy at sea. |

basically, you can wear whatever you want, just casual everyday stuff, for most of the cruise.
the only times you'll need something different is for dinner. it depends on the cruise, but most of them require at the very least a suit for dinner if you choose the nice restaurants to eat in. if you are with a more upper-class ship like one of Cunard's, you'll probably need a tux. |

shorts and tank top during the day or swim wear. Shorts and T-shirt or polo around the ship during the day. At night... dress casual would be great! Dockers and Dress Polo. My husband always wears his tux for formal night....and I wear an evening gown! Isn't that what "Formal" night is all about? Plus the ladies will be falling all over a dashing guy in a tux! LOL! |

depends on the cruise line and the length of the cruise |

TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
|
The dress on ship is casual all day until 6:00PM, so take:
-swim wear (at least 2),
-shorts, tank tops and "T's"
-sandals,
-beach shoes,
-your snorkel equipment if you have it,
-sun glasses and sun screen,
-lotions,
-a cap or big hat for the sun,
-a book if you are a reader,
-your music player,
-sneakers and clothes to workout in if you like to use the gym,
-good walking shoes,
-your camera, and
-other personal toiletries including tooth paste, mouth wash or lotions.
After 6:00 PM they request that you wear "sports or resort casual" attire. That's attire that you would expect a person to wear in a business office, (like a bank employee), shirt with a collar, slacks, etc. You can still wear shorts and swim wear in the pools and spas but not in public areas like dining rooms and restaurants, show rooms, bars, casino, etc. Don't over pack , take clothes that you can mix and match tops and bottoms and plan to wear each piece twice. If you are going to the Caribbean you will likely be in shorts and/or swim wear most of every day so evening clothes don't usually get much wear.
Your cruise will have a formal night or two when you can wear your best stuff and get pictures taken, and maybe meet the ship’s Captain. The formal nights are REQUESTED not required attire. You will not be denied entry to the main dining room if you decide not to dress up, as long as you are at least sports casual. But most people do dress up. A suit or tux if you want to be formal OR just slacks and a shirt with a collar (not a "T" shirt ). Some people dress up both formal nights, some don't. No one is really going to pay much attention to how you are dressed on formal nights. If you don't want to be sitting around folks who are dressed up and you are not then that is a good evening to eat in the buffet which is always casual dining.
If i am going on a 7-day cruise I usually take my tux (you can buy on at JC Penny for $99.), a pair of black and/or gray slacks, and 3 or 4 dress shirts (no ties) that I can wear with the slacks. Then i take a pair of jeans or a warmup suit to lounge around in and/or wear off the ship if its cool, and three or four pairs of shorts (more if I plan to use the gym). Then take one pair of dressy shoes, sneakers and sandals, and beach shoes or flip flops. Remember, you put the sports casual stuff on for dinenr and maybe the show, and the disco, but then you can go back to the short if you want any time after those things or if you do not plan to go to them. |

Most cruise lines' web sites have information about clothing, so do check them! You should know that on some ships informality is the norm (Carnival), while on others formality is clearly the norm (Cunard). Most are in between.
About Cunard ships, you should know that during the day "resort wear" is the norm, meaning nice shorts or slacks and collared shirts. No denim or t-shirts or halter tops for the women at all!. And no swim suits except at the pool. During the evening, "informal" means a jacket and tie for dinner anywhere outside your cabin and anywhere on the ship, and "formal" means a dark suit and tie or a tuxedo. On Cunard ships (QE2, QM2, and Victoria) I have seen the dining room managers at the doors to the dining rooms quietly and politely suggest to people not dressed as requested go to the lido buffet for dinner. Holland America is very similar, although I have never seen anyone turned away at the dining room door. |
