Sorry but there are no downsides. They get on board and they will be catered to all of the time. 24/7 free room service, cabin cleaned twice a day every day. All meals included, beverages like coffee, tea, milk, juices, and punch included; a free show every evening, a casino to enjoy if they want, plenty of entertainment on ship during the day and evening. great port stops with interesting things to do.
No they will not get sea sick
no you will not get raped
no they will not get robbed
no they will not fall over board
No the ship will not sink
Yes it will cost a bit of money and they may perhaps spend more on drinks, souvenirs and tours.
Tell them this too:
Two more passengers jumped or fell -- each from a different cruise ship -- over the July 1st weekend bringing renewed focus on a cruise industry problem which seems headed for a record year.
In one incident, the Coast Guard said it rescued a 29-year-old man about an hour after he went overboard from the Carnival Liberty just before midnight while the ship was 50 miles off the coast of Boca Raton, FL. Authorities said the man appeared to be intoxicated.
In the other incident, an 18-year-old youth who had survived a brutal beating with a pipe last year was observed jumping over the railing of the upper deck of Carnival's Ecstasy early Sunday morning while the ship was 200 miles from shore in the Gulf of Mexico.
The ship's crew recovered the youth's body from the water about a half hour later and he was pronounced dead at 9:10 a.m.
The two incidents dramatize what appears to be a growing problem: nary a month goes by now without extensive news coverage of one or more plunges from a cruise ship. Earlier this year, three passengers went overboard from cruise ships in just one week.
While most of the jumps or falls from cruise ships appear to involve over-consumption of alcohol, a number of less publicized incidents appear to involving persons choosing this method of suicide.
Unfortunately, it is not immediately obvious how cruiselines can reduce the number of incidents. In most cases, balcony railings are high enough to render an accidental fall virtually impossible.
One approach may be to intensify efforts to get out the message that while some jumpers survive, in most cases they are recovered floating face down -- or as with a passenger who went overboard from Liberty of the Seas a week ago, the body is never found.
THEN TELL THEM THIS:
Seventeen passengers from the cruise ship Carnival Conquest were robbed at gunpoint on June 13th during a cruise-sponsored excursion to a Jamaica banana plantation while the ship was visiting Montego Bay.
The passengers, including a half-dozen children, were touring the Lethe Estate owned and operated by former Jamaican Tourism Minister Francis Tulloch.
“They took our cameras, they took cash, passports, IDs, anything of value they could find, and then they went back into the bush,” passenger Kenneth Williams told reporters on the cruise ship's return to Galveston, TX, on Sunday June 17th.
“One of them had the gun right in my daughter’s face, she was pleading for her life,” Williams told KHOU-TV.
While Carnival subsequently said Jamaican authorities apprehended one of the suspects and recovered most of the stolen items, Jamaican newspapers reported the suspect was killed in a shoot-out with police.
News of the incident -- which occurred at the first port on the ship's western Caribbean cruise -- swept through the ship, with many passengers reportedly convinced they were lucky to have not suffered a similar fate.
Tell them to go and have a great time; I have been about 15 time and will be going on two more this year. Its a great vacation. |

why wouldnt you want them to go on a cruise? i have the best memories of my life from going on a cruise..it cant be that bad. but if theres any downside, i guess its the price. you just have to make sure your going on the right one. cus idk what your talking about with the food being expensive..when i went on my cruise all the food was free, they only thing is room service and your drinks, that can get really expensive. |

Maybe you should think about it this way:
1. Your parents have earned the right to do what they want... if they feel they need this it's their right to do it.
2. The relaxation will be good for their minds, their hearts and their souls.. it will keep them younger and the stress reliever will ward off things like heart attacks etc.
3. They will come back happier and more relaxed.
4. They will have stories to tell and pictures to share.
5. They will be enjoying their lives which we ALL should do.
Why do you not want your parents to go on a cruise? Is it for selfish reasons? Can you try and tell yourself that they will be back soon and that it is in their (and your) best interest that they do something in their lives to make them live longer healthier lives? How about you try that? I think if you look at it from that perspective you will see that it makes a lot of sense. |

I agree whole hearted with Tinkertoy. I really don't understand your opinion on the whole subject. Cruising is the happiest place on earth! Why don't you ask if you can go as well. Cruising is not expensive. You can make it expensive. But remember included in the price is all your meals, endless snacks, your room, transportation and the best service in the world. There is NO downside Sorry! |

The only downside I have to cruising is that the time in the ports of call are so short. A lot of the ports have so much to do and see and its difficult to squeeze it all into the few hours you have there. |

Your parents are quite entitled to a little time alone on a cruise. Your day will come when you are old enough. Now go and do everything possible to make sure they have a great time! Help your mom choose cool outfits to wear, assure them that you will be GOOD AS GOLD while they are gone. This is what you will enjoy coming from your children one day... |

Yes it is possible to get sea sick on a cruise, but with over the counter medications, and giant ship stablizers, it is easy to control. Why don't you want your parents to go? Are you honestly worried about there safety? In what way?
The only "downsides" to cruising (And I love to cruise!) is that some people don't realize the price of the cruise isn't as "all inclusive" as people think it is. Yes, food and drinks are almost always included on your brand names, but most people don't take into account the tipping and port charges. Most cruises now charge $10 per person per day for gratuities. For a 2 person cruise, this isn't a big deal for $140 for a 7 day cruise. However, for a family of five, this jumps to $280. Also, there are port charges not included on the given price, and any shore excursions you do while in port are extra. These things need to be taken into consideration. Finally, for drinkers, alcohol on board costs a fortune, so this can really cause you cruise bill to escalate. There is also a small possibility of catching a virus on board.
That being said, Cruising can be great fun. You are catered to 24/7. As far as the recent media publications emphasizing cruise ship deaths, you have to understand that almost all people who go overboard are severely drunk, and are often trying to lean/climb over the side in order to vomit. You rarely ever hear of an accidental overboard. This has only happened once in the last several years that I know about, in which a woman fell overboard when the ship listed (tilted) severely, because there was a severe storm, and the person at the wheel spun it too fast. Also, this woman was found OK. Yes, there is the possibility for theft or crime, but it is certainly no more riskier than anywhere else, and is probably safer than many hotels and resorts, due to high levels of staffing and round the clock camera surveilence.
If your parents really want to go on a cruise, wish them well and tell them to enjoy themselves. There is very little chance of anything going wrong. |

I've heard of cases in the news about women getting raped, people having been robbed and people going missing. Then you have to think about the unforseen storms and troubles the ship can get into. |

Let your parents enjoy their well deserved vacation and stop being a brat. They've done so much for you and you're trying to stop them from enjoying their vacat ion? Cruises are great....let them have their fun. When you grow up, you can do the same. Can't think of anything negative to say about cruises. |
