You shouldn't need to carry your passport with you when ashore, unless you're going to Egypt or Russia. As far as I remember those were the only places I have been when you definitely needed your passport to get in and out of the port area.
Have a look at http://www.cruisecritic.com
Look for your ship or your ports of call, you will find all the information you need.

Unless you think you may miss the ship you should not need your passport off the ship. The sigh and sail card will get you back on the ship. Put your passport in the safe onboard.

never take your passport off the ship..get a photo copy if you realy want it with you.

You don't need to take your passport off the ship with you. Just have your state ID or something. If you want just make a copy of your passport. You have a greater risk of losing it if you go swimming with it. Plus new microchips have been implanted in the passports you can damage your passport. It wouldn't be a smart thing to swim with it. even if you have protection on it.

Do not take your passport with you when you get off the ship. You just need a photo ID such as a driver license as well as your ship's keycard (sign & sail). Your passport should remain locked in your cabin safe.

I've often wondered about that. Would the cruise line be able to offer any advice? Or your travel agent?

A couple of years ago I saw something advertised by LLBean that was like a little beach pouch you wore around your neck for your wallet. But then I worried it could fall off. You almost want something small and water-proof that you wear like a tight-fitting tiny backpack or moneybelt.
