Personally, I don't think that any cruise line can compete with booking your own excursions. It takes a little leg work before your trip, but it is well worth it. I saw some groups of 25+ from the cruise line (Carnival) and we only had about 10 in our private group. It's cheaper too!
Check out http://www.cruisecritic.com - You can get information about all sorts of excursions on the message board for each port. Do your research and you will have the BEST time!

That really depends on where you are going. The cruise lines partner with vendors in the area. Many cruise lines use the same vendors. If you are into snorkeling and/or scuba diving, Belize is the #1 spot. There are literally hundreds of excursions. It would depend on your interest, your physical ability, and the amount you are willing to pay. They range from a few hours to all day, as well as easy to do all the way to physical demanding, and can run from $50 to several hundred. I would suggest going on the cruise lines' website and check out the shore excursions. |

I would agree that Royal Caribbean has the best excursions....a great variety. They can get very pricey, but they are good. If cost is an issue, you can book locally through the same places that Royal Caribbean does, but unfortunately, if you're late on a excursion (due to weather or something) the ship will not wait for you if you didn't book it through RC. |

I rarely use the cruise shore excursions. It's often much much cheaper to hire when you arrive, hire before you sail, or simply hire a cab to go to the beach.
Here's an example - in St. Thomas we wanted to go to Magen's Bay. The RCCL fee was $22.00 a person for two hours on the beach. We hired a taxi driver for like $8 each way and spent all day there. |
