What cruise should I take?

I'm 25 and I want to take my mother who is 55 on a cruise next year. We want to have lots to do, preferably not gambling, and it be geared more to people late 20's to mid 30's. This includes bars and clubs on the boat. So I want to know what you would recommend for a cruise line (I've heard Carnival is nice), what time of year would be best (i would like to go in the later part of 2009), where would be the best place to go (i want it to be islandy).

Each cruise-line has a different feel. I have been on Princess, Celebrity and Carnival. A few things to keep in mind. The longer the cruise, the older the crowd. If you cruise on a school break -- more children. If you take a very short cruise deeply discounted, you are likely to get young families and college age kids.
I have been on several cruises 10 days and more and they all tend toward older crowds and not as much night life. If you want more night life I would think 7 days or less or over a common vacation time. (otherwise mostly retirees)
From my experience Carnival was the most casual, then princess and Celebrity was nice ... every dinner was elegant and a little more upscale than Carnival.
There are two great cruise boards where you can learn anything you want about cruising. Cruisemates.com and cruisecritic.com
Good luck! Cruising is my favorite way to vacation!

take her to the Caribbean where it is warm, and on carnival or royal Caribbean.

gone!
If this cruise is for your Mother. I think you need to re think your itinerary, I;m sure your mother would want to go on a cruise with people more her age not yours, that's a bit selfish of you. you'll be having all the fun while she is bored. so take her on a cruise that has MIXED ages . try the Caribbean, you can pick a cruise with lots of stops at various islands where you can BOTH have fun , not just you. Try the cruise ship holiday out of Mobile Alabama. $400 each for the week, Very inexpensive and lots of fun.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines....there is stuff to do for all ages. We cruised the western Caribbean (Haiti, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel) in March 08 on the Liberty of the Seas and we ranged in age from 68 to 25 and we all had fun together and apart.

There is plenty to do and see on the cruise, from ice skating shows to musical productions to bars and clubs and yes, even gambling.

We always found something different and new to do every day of our 7-day cruise.

Just my two cents! Have fun with whatever you choose!

Carnival is nice but you might try to get a deal on one of the usually pricier lines -- they might have a discount due to the market crash. Of course it depends if you want to meet people similar to you or take a chance on rubbing elbows with "old money" types. A little more money can go far these days; you will get better service, interesting people with life styles that vary from what you'd ordinarily see. Norwegian and Dutch lines are nice, and the British, too. Keep an open mind and do some digging. I took my first cruise two years ago on the Disney Wonder. Great service and food and entertainment and all kinds of interesting people; but of course the boat was crawling with children, soo....great for young parents at least.

the best thing to do is talk to someone live and get the answers over the phone there's a lot of nice places to go and see but go through a service that you can talk to
