What currency do you need to take on a Caribbean cruise?

It just occurred to me that we will be visiting a few different locations and I don't know what currency any of them use. Will we able to exchange currency on the cruise ship for each different location or should we try to sort it all at home in advance. We are going to Colombia, Trinidad, Grenada, Panama, Limon and Barbados.

Although US dollars is accepted everywhere you might still have some challenges. In Colombia you will need to go and get the money change since thy use pesos. You should be able to find some booths to change the money or in the port.

Not everyone will have US change to give you back so you will have to change it at the bank or some places have up signs saying how much they are paying. The rate in the bank is 6 TT to 1 US but some people might give you 6.15.

In Grenada they will take the US but will give you back the change in EC dollars. The exchange rate is EC 2.70 for 1 US. Very few places might have change but not all. In the mall after passing through from the ship they will have change.

I do not know about Panama nor Limon but I am sure you will be sorted out.

In Barbados the exchange rate is 2 for 1 US so it is a bit easier. All taxi drivers and some stores like Colombian Emeralds, Cave Shepherd, Harrison's, Royal Shop etc will have change in US. The other stores will all take the US but you will not get back Us change. Their exchange rate is either 2 for 1, 1.98 or 1.95. There is not much difference so you do NOT need to change your US currency.

You can use your credit card in all these places but inform the bank before traveling so that they will not suspect that someone else is using the cards.

greneda accept Easten carribean dollors
barbados have there own dollars aswell as trinidad

your best bet would be to bring your own currency and exchange it over there...the exchange rate will be considerably low because of the christmas period..hope this helps

Just get US dollars, I've cruised the Caribbean a few times and never had any problem using US dollars anywhere. In fact, in many places, they would rather have US dollars in preference to the local currency.

i just returned and wondered same thing before going. Your good ole American dollar might be feeling the pinch but she will get accepted everywhere in caribbean.

The US dollar is widely accepted throuout the Caribean but it is worth noting that any change given is also in US currency. The ship is a bad place to exchange currency and then any unused will have to be changed back.I will also be doing the same visiting 17 ports in 30 days. My advice is set in stone after 73 cruises mostly in the Caribean.Enjoy Ocean Village

US dollars are accepted all over the Caribbean.

Paul
The US Dollar will probably be accepted in all these places.
Just check with your local travel agent.

They LOVE American money and it is used in all ports. Most places will even give you American money back. Once I wanted local money and to ask for it.

American money is accepted just about everywhere, but if not the ships do have a machine that will exchange your money. The easy way is to just use your credit or debit card. Be sure to tell whomever you have your cards with that you are going out of the country. That way they won't get suspicious with Caribbean charges. The other benefit of using a credit card is they guarantee your purchase.

On the ship you need us dollars. But if you plan to do some shopping iff shore its best to get a small summ in every countrys currency and its much better to do that before your cruise starts since changing isnt a cruise lines best part. But if youre not into shopping you can get youre credit card along you (youll use it for your onboard account anyway) and thats work on more places than you think. Johan.
