Go someplace. I dislike cruises that focus on shipboard activities and spend days at sea. The destinations are what influences my cruise picks. If you have time beforehand & are a tad more adventurous, research doing your own shore excursions. Go to Cruise Critic website for advice from other passengers.

Soft drinks and coffee drinks (expresso, capuccino, fancier stuff) along with alcoholic beverages are not included in the price of your cruise (with most cruise lines). The Princess cruise I took last New Year's gave free basic coffee, but everything else was a charge.

Go to the cruise line's web site to see what's included (including daily tips) or not. And good old Cruise Critic is great to find out the kind of cruise that fits your personality. You'll see opinions of set dining times/tables versus open seating.

The price of food is included (unless you opt to eat at one of the specialty restaurants). There are tons of activities scheduled each day when you're at sea the whole day, like water volleyball, bingo, scavenger hunts, karaoke, art auctions, and there are also casinos, bars, pools, and nightclubs. Some boats even have minigolf, climbing walls, surfing, ice skating rinks, and all manner of new crazy stuff is being thought up every year. Its a vacation even if you never leave the ship. Activities in port really depend on where your ship actually goes; in the caribbean you can go snorkling, sailing, horseback riding, shopping duty free, SCUBA diving, go on a zipline through a rain forest, ride ATVs, you name it and it probably is an excursion somewhere.

There are many act ivies on a cruise from just lounging around the pool to games put on by the cruise staff to spending your money in the casino. All food is included in Cruise price except specialty restaurants that will have an extra charge. Even room service is free.

Growing up, my only experience with cruising was the show, "Love Boat." That show made it appear that unless a jewel theif robbed your cabin, you spent the rest of the time waiting for your turn at shuffleboard. Needless to say, I wasn't too excited about my first cruise.

Food is free on a cruise and the food is amazing. Even though there are formal dining rooms if you want two surf and turf dinners, no problem. Juice is free, but not pop and alcohol. Most cruise lines have sit-down dining area where you are served and a buffet for breakfast. Lunch is limited. Usually there's a grill or a pizza place and snacks during lunch. Dinner is mostly sit down dining and often the wait staff put on a performance of some kind. Some cruises have (more) private dining rooms for dinner where you make a reservation and you pay something like $20 a plate. There are typically two dinner sessions on a cruise. I recommend the 2nd seating because this will give you more time on shore and you aren't rushed to get to dinner.

The reason lunch isn't a big deal on a cruise (and why "Love Boat" didn't do cruising a favor) is that you usually don't spend your days on board. Hopefully your intenerary takes you to a different exotic location everyday and you spend the daytime hours exploring, shopping, snorkling, sailing, etc.

At night there is entertainment. There's a movie theater, stage performances, casino, dancing and lounges.

Some cruise iteneraries take more than one day to get to a destination - they call these, "days at sea". On these days you'll have to take advantage of what's on board. They have a workout room, spa, rock climbing, minature golf, a couple simming pools. One cruise ship even has an ice rink. The activity planner will also arrange competitions of different kinds.
