What do you recommend to take on a cruise?

Show all answers

Princess Buttercup
swimsuit
sunscreen (more than you think you need)
lotion
bug spray (or wipes)
formal wear (differs according to cruiseline and cruise length)
dressy casual wear for dinners
some cash (for port cities)
a list of people you need to buy souveiners for
your passport (just makes things easier)
1 bottle of water per person - refill it on the ship each day
lots of ponytail holders (if anyone has long hair)

You really shouldn't need motion sickness pills unless you are extremely sensitive. The ships are so big and with such good stabilizers that most people don't need them. If you fear that you may, the ships desk usually will have some available.

It often depends on where you are going but I always recommend packing clothes that you can layer. If you are in the Carribean it may be warm outside but it can be freezing in the dining room, Theatre or other parts of the ship. It's just the opposite in Alaska where you can be cool to freezing outside and get blasted with heat when you come inside. I'd start out with a light T-shirt add a long sleeve top and a jacket and then peal things off as the temp changes.
Some people don't want to deal with the whole dressing up on formal nights and others go all out. Instead of bringing 3 outfits with matching shoe & dressy purses I take one black sleeveless long dress and black shoes & purse. Then I have 3 different tops to change the outfit, one sequin & bead silk shawl, a jacket with rinestones and a sheer multi-colored long cover. Each outfit looks completely different and it cuts down on packing to much.
Take comfortable walking shoes. In Europe you do tons of walking and comfort is more important that looks.
You may not know this but most cruise ships have laundry rooms and when I've taken two week cruises instead of packing 2 weeks worth of clothes I only pack a one week supply and do laundry half way through the cruise.
No matter what cruise line you take their is always the possibility of being robbed while you are off the ship. I do not recommend taking expensive jewelry and I have met many cruisers that take fabulous fake jewelry for the formal nights and no one can tell the difference.
I worked for a cruise line for three years and have gone on many cruises and this is the best advise I can give you. I hope you have a wonderful time.

Have fun. I hope this helps. The first thing I would pack is nausea medication.

alot of very good advice here.
For more good advice, try this web site

I studied this website for months before I went on a Mexican Riviera Cruise on the Diamond Princess in 2004. Very good and reliable site.

google "cruise packing" You will get dozens of websites written by experienced cruisers. The cruising motto is " half the clothes and twice the Money" Seriously don't take everything they tell you to. Its just a suggestion of what might be important to you. Check to see if your ship has a self serve laundry. You can take fewer clothes that way.
