When a boat, ship or any vessel is "Listing" it means it is tilting to one side or the other. A vessel can list for different reasons, such as when it is taking on water and in danger of sinking or when it's cargo shifts off center to one side. Or when in the case of the cruise liner that was reported in Florida the other day, it listed to one side because the rudder had dislodged from the steering mechanism and caused it to turn an excessive amount causing everyone on board to loose their footing thereby causing injuries. Vessels that list to much can and do capsize (flip upside down) on occasion .

On July 18th the Crown Princess reported "listing" or making "heavy turns" to the port side, about 15 degrees from the horizontal, and they contacted the US Coast Guard immediately. The cruise ship was on its way home to New York City when it had to make an emergency stop at Port Canaveral in Florida due to a malfunction in the steering equipment causing tilting of the ship and injuries.[1] In fact, on the night before the "heavy listing", the movie Titanic was played in the ship's movie theater. However, Titanic is commonly shown on recent Princess cruises.
As of 8:30 AM PT July 19, Princess says that "approximately 240 passengers treated onboard for various injuries such as abrasions, bruises and fractures, of which 94 were transferred to local hospitals ashore for evaluation and treatment."
The incident has yet to be investigated.
I personally believe the ship are being built to large and have to little draft.. I think we will be hearing more of this as the greedy cruise lines try to pack 10's of thousands of people on one ship.
Cruising used to be an upscale vacation , but now it is all party til you puke mentality. Dress for dinner -- does not mean tank tops and ragged cut offs !!!
