What happens on a cruise if there is a storm?

They will re-route you. For instance, if you were scheduled to go to Cozumel the 2nd day of your Port of Call, they might change it to the last day to get around the storm. If the storm is heading to where ever you are going, they might change your destination. Don't worry, the captain and his crew know what they are doing. Yes, it is definitely worth going, funnest vacation I have been on! There is so much stuff to do, no one can ever say "I'm bored". They know how to get to shore because they have a GPS system and technical equipment that help them get there safe and accurately.

Most ships are equipped with radar to detect big storms. I have been on a cruise during a moderate storm and the ship rocked and rolled a bit. Not to worry. The size of the ship makes it safe. As for getting to shore, they usually dock next to a huge pier and you can walk right off.

TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
Cruise ships do a great job of tracking weather and will stay away from a storm, like a hurricane. They will sail in a different direction, change the order of ports stops and/or make other adjustments to stay away from storms. BUT, the weather can sometimes be unpredictable and be bad even if it is not hurricane status. Sometimes its just windy and the seas are high.

I just got back from a cruise across the Pacific to Hawaii and back and we had 20 to 30 foot waves and 40 MPH winds for a couple days and the ship did a lot of rocking. I was on the RC's Radiance of the Seas and it does have stabilizers, which were deployed, but the ship still rocked quite a bit. We were not in a hurricane but the winds were just below hurricane force for a day or so.

Absent the wind and waves the ship was as smooth as a ride in a car down the highway.

They have equipment to detect a storm..

The ships are very good at avoiding storms! However, if there is a really large storm system there will certainly be some effects, such as more swell and rain. I was on the QE2 crossing the Atlantic when it skirted the northern edge of a very large storm system in the Caribbean -- fog horn blowing and plenty of swell! On the evening when it was fairly rough weather outside they literally LOCKED all the doors to the outside decks!
