The Bahamas are in the Caribbean. I went on a carnival cruise (the Imagination) out of Miami that went to Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, and Nassau all in the Bahamas. All islands had amazing beaches. Carnival had so much to do for everyone at all times. They would have all sorts of contests on the beaches when in port sand castle, relays stuff like that if you weren't doing the excursions. Carnival is the "fun" ship and it really is. So many things for everyone to do of any age all the time. Waterslides, mini golf, gym, spa, adults only deck, clubs, piano bars, live music...and so much more.
Check out my photos to give you an idea of what those islands are like and also what the ship I went on was like. Feel free to contact me with any other ?'s you may have. :)

The problem with the Bahamas is that the ship docks at a pier downtown (Freeport and Nassau), where the featured "attraction" is the straw market. And, as someone mentioned earlier, it's just a bunch of expensive junk.
I think you would enjoy going to the various other ports of call throughout the Caribbean more than the Bahamas. |

There are many more things to see and do if you go to the islands of the Caribbean. The Bahamas is very nice and has great beaches, but not near the amount of activity that your children will want. I am a cruise specialist and would be happy to help you plan your vacation. |

i would suggest the Caribbean. Jamaica is a great place to go to with great food, sports and clean beaches! |

Honestly I've never been happy on the stops in the Bahamas. First most of the shorter cruises are to the Bahamas and me personally I don't see the point in a 3-4 day cruise. It's just too short. You leave Sun and return Thurs you'll already missed the whole work week anyway so unless you work weekends, why not stay the whole 7?
Many stops in the Bahamas are what I call "fake ports". They are the cruise lines private islands. Now some people absolutely love these ports but the cruise line built it so it's either completely unspoiled with just a bathroom shack and a volleyball net up, or it's been turned into a cartoon version of Mexico that looks a little too made-up for my tastes. Many cruises seem to always have one stop at a private island but I make sure that I don't do that if the other ports of call are very natural as well (St Kitts and Grand Turks come to mind). I don't want them to all just be "stroll on the beach" b/c that's boring to me.
Freeport was a terrible port and really if I ever go back there, I think I'll stay on the boat. It's just a straw market with every stall just like the next and all Made in China. This one had sweatshirts, this one can coozies, this one can coozies and sweatshirts, the exact same style and exact same colors. I imagine one box ordered in bulk comes to the island and they just all divide it. Nothing was unique and nothing was made on the island plus the prices were really high. We'd just been in Belize and all these kids had necklaces and bracelets they made for about $1-2. So I thought I'd pay about $5. They were asking $15 for a hemp necklace. The sweatshirts were $60. The one on the cruise ship that says the ship's name is only $45. I told the person that as I walked off. Plus they were the least willing to haggle either. Mexico, you ask the price and then you start. Each person goes a little closer until you agree. In Bahamas they look at you like you have insulted their mother.
I have cruised to several islands and just absolutely loved them. I've been to Aruba, Barbados, Dominica, St Thomas, St Maarten, Grand Cayman, Cozumel a couple of times, Belize a couple of times, Honduras, San Juan and I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple. By the end of this month I'll have added Grand Turk on there as well. There are so many gorgeous islands that I'd hate for you to start with the Bahamas. My two favorite ports of call are St Thomas and Cozumel. There is so much to do and see there. I've been to St Thomas numerous times and am going again this month--I still don't feel like I've done most of what there is to do. I've never been to Megans Bay and this time I'm thinking of doing the skyride. www.stthomasskyride.com.
When you've limited it down a bit, check out reviews on cruisecritic.com. That can help you decide on which ship and which shore excursions are best. |
