What is considered formal wear on a cruise ship, For a woman?

Formal wear is not a nice pants suit for a woman, unless she is old. People take liberty with the 'formal dress' request, but traditionally it is a cocktail or formal dress. That does not mean a sun dress, that does not mean a denim skirt, that does not mean a terry cloth pullover. It means something at least knee length, appropriate material and colour, and a pair of heels. I *always* wear a little black dress or something of that nature for formal night.

It's not a 'night out' dress or a obviously sexy dress (although my little black dresses are very sexy because they are classy). It's what you would wear to a semi-formal cocktail party, not out clubbing.

Men are expected to wear a suit or tuxedo, especially for the first formal night, so you want to match.

If you don't want to dress up, they will usually have a buffet or other more casual restaurants that you can go to. : )

These days, I'd say a white life jacket before Labor Day and an orange one after. Good luck.

What should I pack?
Pack like you would for any resort. Cruise vacations are casual by day, whether you're on the ship or ashore. In the evening, ships vary as to dress. As on shore, attire is dictated by occasion. For the Captain's Gala, for example, you'll probably want to wear something more formal, such as a dark suit, or cocktail dress; perhaps even a dinner jacket or gown.

any type of dress that you would wear going out at night, or to a party or wedding,

A NICE SPARKLY DRESS OR JUST A NICE SEXY DRESS, NOT THE KIND YOU WOULD WEAR TO WORK THOUGH.

Formal wear is nice a nice dress or pant suit. Black gowns work, a nice pant suit also works. Something a little nicer than an ordinary dress, but you don't have to go all out.

You can call the cruise line/ask your travel agent, what your line considers formal. Some are a little different than others and/or aren't real strict with their dress codes.

I think formal would be dressier, but not prom wear. I can't wait until my cruise next month and making fun of all the sequins - they are the evil.

formal wear for a man is a Tux. a woman's would be a Cocktail or floor length gown. Tasteful, not trashy.

notyou311
The same kind of clothes you would wear to a formal wedding reception. A cocktail dress, a long skirt and beaded top, or a formal gown will do.

mcstennis09
a nice dress, most cruises have formal wear rentals

From my experience the women wear long dresses in dark colors. A sleeveless dress with a silky or sparklling shawl around the shoulders is a great look for formal night. Don't forget shiny or sparkly jewelry. I think you would feel out of place in a regular dress. A pantsuit might work if it is wide legged and flowing like a long dress would be.

a nice dress in usually what is worn. What you wear out on the town.

On Carnival and Royal Caribbean, you will see anything from Black dress slacks, pant suit (something that you would wear on Easter Sunday) all the way to glamorous cocktail dress...sequins, strapless, glittery dresses...long and short...
for men anything from black pants and a suite jacket to tuxedos...
Cunard lines, are more of the sequins and glittery cocktail dress..
any other cruise line you may need to talk to your travel agent...or call the cruise line directly.
If you are on a 7 day, there will be two dress up nights... the first is the dressiest, that is the captains cocktail party..the second one is less dressier.

NOT EVERYONE HAS OR HAS ACCESS TO A COCKTAIL DRESS......

islandgrl
a nice pant suit or dress suit.
