I have been on two Mediterranean cruises and here's my advice on costs. First, you have to consider how many days the cruise will be. Several cruise lines do Med cruises and they are usually either 7 days or 12 days. The 7 day cruises are generally one way; they leave from one port and end at another. The 12 day cruises are generally round trip; they leave from for example, Barcelona, and return there. So to figure the average price you have to first decide how many days you want to cruise; or how many days the cruise you like will take.
The second thing to consider is there are 4 basic types cabin to reserve, (1) inside, (2) outside, (3) balcony/Veranda, and (4) suites. So you have to compare cabins of the same type. The prices of these vary only slightly by cruise line.
Third, and most important, all of the cruise lines give big discounts for early bookings. Early means like 9 to 12 months or more before the cruise.
Finally, all cabins are sold double occupancy, for two people per cabin and usually the fare for the third and fourth persons are very low, as low as $300 to $500 a person for each of the other two people. I have seen some 7 day cruises where the 3rd and 4th persons in a cabin were as low as $199.
The price will also be more if you ask that airfare be included. But you can book just the cruise and do your own airfare.
So if you see a fare for a 12 day Med cruise you can estimate that the fares for the third and fourth persons will be about 25% of that for the first two people. I always use the cruise line web sites to book my cruises on line, rather than other sites like Expedia or cruise wholesaler sites. What I have found when shopping for cruises is that you can select a cruise, select a sale date, select a cabin and then the site will give you a total price. Then if you are not ready to book and just want to know how much you can just cancel or quit the action (just close the window) and start over or go to another site.
The two cruises of the Med that we did were both 12 days and cost about $2,000 each person for a balcony cabin. If we had wanted a third and/or fourth person to share the cabin it would have probably been about $1,000 more for BOTH of the other two people.
So, my estimate is about $3,000 for a 12 day with a balcony cabin. But, as I said there are several other variable that can affect the final price. |
