It really depends on what sort of holiday you like to go on.
If you like informal holidays - i.e. where you don't have to dress up in formal wear, then you should try Royal Caribbean, NCL, Ocean Village, or other companies similar to this. Though of course you can dress up in formal wear on these holidays, you just don't have to. These holidays also tend to be for the more active and adventurous.
If you prefer to dress up in formal wear in the evenings then try:
Princess, P&O, Celebrity, Holland America, Cunard and other companies like this.
If you've got quite a bit of money to spend, and you like 5*+ luxury, then try Silversea, Crystal or Oceania Cruises.

There is no ''best'' cruise company.
It all depends on what style of cruising you prefer, what facilites, adult only or family.
Get as many brochures and visit as many web sites as possible.
Cruising is a fantastic way to holiday.

Go to your local library and borrow a book called "Ocean Cruising and Cruise Ships" a travel book by Berlitz, written by Douglas Ward who is reckoned to be the World's leading critic on cruise travel.
In over 600 pp he discusses pros and cons of Cruising holidays, describes all the Cruising lines and then tells you about every ship in every Line.
He tells you which ship is most suitable for each type of passenger - old or young, single traveller, family-orientated ships, and facilities available. I wouldn't book a holiday without doing my homework first, unlike a friend who has been put off cruising for life after a holiday on a Line which was totally unsuitable for the type of holiday she was seeking.
Once you have decided on a few possible ships and destinations, go into www.cruisecritic in which ex-cruisers give their own opinions and experiences on their holiday.

What is "best" depends on what you want in the way of price, itinerary, schedule, and amenities. My personal choice is Cunard.

my mum and dad went on a celebrity cruise round alaska in august and absolutely loved it. my mum had never wanted to go on a cruise before but my dad talked her into it. she said she'd go again with that company

that is a very loaded question, how old are you what do you look for in a cruise, are you a big drinker, do you like sight seeing??? What time of the year are you thinking of, ar you travelling with kids? Etc Etc Etc.

The best ones to look at are Celebrity, (brand new Solstice) Royal Caribbean cruises(check out their new OASIS>>>>>>>>WOW) are great for all ages. Costa Cruises are great, really relaxed and great food. NCL (Norwegian Cruise Lines) have great freestyle dinning which means you can eat in one of the many restaurants with whomever and at whatever time you prefer.

cunard ....

Time travler
My personal favorite is Princess but you can get many different answers on this one. The top lines are crystal, cunard, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Celebrity, Holland America, Carnival, and Disney. Each one is unique, but they are all very good cruise lines.
