What is the best way to book a cruise?

I want to go on a short cruise (to see if I even like cruising) from San Diego. I called one person whose agency I found on a web page, talked to a travel agent, and called the cruise directly (Carnival cruises). Is there an advantage to picking one over the other? Prices/terms seem to vary slightly.

I would go thru cruise directly.. We are currently booked on Holland and did it thru an agent. I have called them directly (Holland) with questions and they wont talk to me. They send me back to agent. She has not been a lot of help once she got final payment so we have kinda been stuck!

First of all, you will LOVE cruising!!! I would book either with Carnival directly, or I use a site called cruisesonly.com They're awesome. They can help you with any questions you may have. Picking the one you want is all just based on the itinerary, price, and when you want to go. Wherever you go, you will have an awesome time!

wondering
I agree, go through the cruise line directly either online or call.

If you are going with a group, I would say go threw a travel agents for sure. They can help to make sure you are all sat at the same dinner table.

If its just you and another person, I would just go through the cruise lines website.

I personally would go with calling the cruise line. This way you can talk with them an get there opinions etc... plus you know its right and that there are no mistakes. Also sometimes they will suggest or find a better deal ex. on a room.

I found that I could save a couple or few hundred $ by using Travelocity vs. going direct to the cruise line I was interested in. The disadvantage, I believe, is that I may have then sacrificed any chance at a free room upgrade which I believe is a common practice.
