What is the custom dress code for the captains dinner on a cruise?

I'm wanting to know how formal you or informal you need to dress for the dinner. Some tell me that they wore fancy dinner dresses or even some prom looking dresses.

Depends a lot on the cruise line, plus what you and your traveling companion(s) feel comfortable with.

The high-end cruise lines require the most formality. On Cunard and Seabourn guys have to be in a tuxedo or very nice suit, and women in a comparable gown.

On Holland America, Celebrity, and Princess, a jacket and tie are still important. A nice dress or pantsuit is key for ladies.

On Royal Caribbean and Carnival they're more relaxed, especially on shorter or warm-weather cruises.

You CAN definitely wear something fancy if you want on any of them. I've seen plenty of guys on Carnival in tuxedos, and women in prom-looking dresses. But some guys just go in button-down shirts and khakis, some women in regular dresses.

I think the key is to match the people you're traveling with.

Hope that helps!

Formal most of the time. Cocktail dresses are acceptable, prom dresses are a bit too much and they're a pain to travel with.

On my cruises, people have really dressed up for the Captain's Dinner. I wore a formal black dress. My mom and sister also wore nice dresses and my dad wore a suit. This is the way that most people are dressed at the dinner. If you don't dress up, you'll probably feel out of place.

Hope this was helpful!

Yes for the captins dinner you should plan on wearing something you would wear to a formal wedding. Some people go as far as wearing something you would wear to a prom. For the males just suit would work. Have a great time.

Guys should wear a suit and the ladies should wear a nice dress.
