I went in Sept 2008 and it was right inbetween some hurricane activity. I have to say we had the most perfect weather you could ask for. The sea was gentle, the sun was shining perfect.
I do have to say that there is always the possibility that your ship will get diverted to another port or just out of the way of the storm. They know where the storms are and they will not take you into them, rather they will take you away. Rates are cheeper and as a plus, there are less kids on board!! |

I've been onboard a cruise ship from June until December in the Caribbean and we had no issues - I think we changed itinerary twice in those 6 months.
@Per
While technically a cruise ship moves faster than the eye of a hurricane, since there is more to a hurricane than the eye - out running it is not that simple.
In a case of heavy storms the ports are no safe haven - a ship would need to get out of the port, in order not to get smashed against the pier... |

I highly recommend travels insurance- it's usually about ran extra $150. I've heard positive and not so positive stories. You have to be watchful because if you hit a storm while traveling it equals a lot of sick passengers. |

We don't sail past the first few weeks of June anymore...
We were on RC in July, 2005 and got caught in the Gulf between Tropical Storm Cyndy and Hurricane Dennis.
The captain out ran the storms by re-routing us to Progresso.
2 of the nights were really rough plus it was really disappointing to miss Grand Caymans.
Keep in mind, if GC is on your itinerary, the cruise ships have to skip this port of call for any bad weather because of the tender requirement.
Your cruise can seem like a bust if you are expecting to do and see certain things and your plans get changed due to weather.
While we did not experience this, folks sailing during Hurricane Ike could not return to Galveston due to the damage from the hurricane.
So not only do you need to consider what could happen to you while your at sea but also what could happen to your debarkation port and car, if parked at the terminal! |

I have been on 4 cruises- 2 to the Caribbean and 2 to Canada/New England. They have all been in the summer, and we have never had a hurricane. Also, most of the time, the captain knows when a hurricane is coming and they will go around it, and most likely redirect you to a different port. for example, if there was hurricane in the western caribbean, instead of going to the western caribbean, they might take you to the eastern caribbean. The ships crew will do everything to ensure your safety. |

Go for it!
If the storm is expected to hit the places on your itinerary, the cruise line will divert you to another port. You will NEVER be sent to a hurricane. And your vacation will not get cancelled. Also, it's smarter to book a cruise than a hotel because if the storm hits the hotel, you need to evacuate and you will have a lousy time. A cruise will always be fun, and you will never have a storm |

I don't think you have to worry about it. Cruise ships actually move faster than hurricanes, and there are tons of ports you can stop in to take shelter. |

Generally, the ship diverts to another port. |

For me it is too big of a risk. Even if your lucky enough to not have a hurricane, some of those tropical storms that time of the year are bad enough. You will notice that Princess cruises doesn't even do Caribbean cruises that time of the year, except from the East Coast. That way, they can divert the ship easier, plus hurricanes on the East coast are very rare. Too bad other cruise companies don't do the same thing. |

I went during hurricane season. I just watched the weather forecast and got travelers insurance. I was told that the ship will detour if they know a storm is head their way. Since hurricane season starts in June and ends in November that a big stretch to deal with when trying do a cruise. You take chance anytime your going anywhere that's coastal.
**Note to Time traveler**Carnival owns Princess and there have been several HC that hit east coast. Not all make land fall, but at least 10 or more a year develop on the East coast. |
