What necessities are needed to go on a tropical cruise besides the basics?

A light windbreaker because it can get cold. Check the weather.
Extra batteries.
Sunscreen.
I get free seasick medicine from the purser.
Make sure to pack the stuff you will need for the first 6 hours in your carry on bag because you won't get your bags immediately. That may include your swim suit.

Make sure that you bring plenty of light jackets. I went last year in July and I was freezing on deck at night.. I was dying from heat stroke when we left N.O., but it sure does get cool at night.

Don't worry if you forget something, on-board shops stock all necessities (at reasonable prices too!). Have a lovely time. Don't forget your credit card to pay your on-board account!!

Definately a few swimsuits, flip flops, camera, a travel alarm, plenty of $1 bills... If you think you need it, take it anyway you never know!

Definitely some sunscreen and sunglasses! A hat would be good, too -- the kind that is completely flat to pack and can get wet. You will definitely want some sort of flipflop or shoe that can get wet for hot and/or slick pool decks. Finally, a tote bag! The tote bag is for your sunglasses, book, ID/key, casino cash, sunscreen, daily program, etc.

for the ship I always pack:

a power strip
dramamine
tums
pepto
hand sanitizer
band aids
neosporin
advil
allergy meds
lots of white tees
sunblock
a good suntan lotion with at least 10 spf
a good book
lots on 1 dollar bills
I always pack like a caribbean themed outfit just in case of a caribbean themed party
a couple of sweaters or light jackets it gets cold in the public rooms and on deck
