What should I wear for formal night on 4 day cruise?
This is my first cruise and I'm not sure what to wear for the formal night? Long gown, knee length black dress or pant suit? Any suggestions?
Since you're talking 4-day cruise, I'm sure it's on Carnival or Royal Caribbean. Depending on your cruise line "formal" has taken on different meanings. However, you'd be safe with any of the three outfits you've mentioned in your question.
Go and have a good time and don't obsess about it.
Bon voyage!

Personally I like to take the advantage and use those fancy gowns that I have around like bridesmaids dresses and prom gowns. You usually never get a chance to dress up so I take advantage and go all out. However, there are people with just simple dresses and pant suits or pants with blouses. It is really what you prefer and are comfortable wearing.

Formal has taken on more than one meaning now as it pertains to cruise ships. I personally always wear a Tux and my wife always wears a formal dress or gown. A dark suit is also approprate now and even people who 'dress nicely' like they are going to church or a wedding is okay now. I think it is really nice to dress up in formal attire for your significant other.

You could wear any. We took a 4 night cruise in August, and most women were wearing long gowns and knee length dresses, there were only a few who wore pant suites. Most men wore suites, some wore sport coats and ties. It depends upon what you like and the occasion for the cruise. If its romantic then definitely wear the long gown and have as many pictures taken as you can on that night (They take the pictures then you just buy the ones you want.).

You'll see a range of fancy dress from sparkley long gowns to short cocktail dresses. Even pant suits are okay as long as they are of a more dressier fabric (like silk). Guys can wear tuxes or suits.

Some people get really dressed up for formal night, others don't. I would suggest wearing a nice black dress. Some people get dressed REALLY formal while others will show up wearing jeans. But i black dress always looks nice.
