Royal Caribbean has shipboard cellular coverage that supports all US cellular carriers, including Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T.
While I understand that you need to keep in touch with your family, be warned roaming onboard the ship is EXTREMELY expensive. You should check with your carrier for exact rates and then think about just how much you need to be in contact with them...
If you can go a day or two without speaking with them and only call them when you are in port it may actually be cheaper for you to purchase international calling cards to use when you are in port on your cruise. The per minute rates on the calling cards are often MUCH cheaper than the international roaming rates you will be charged if you use your cell phone. |

They have a satelite service on the ship. You connect through that network. It is expensive, and does not use your plan minutes. You pay for all the minutes you use.
Had the same thing on Carnival last Sept. I was able to use my T-Mobile phone in the middle of the Caribbean. Sea. |

I was on Royal Caribbea's Rhapsody of the Seas in April, in the Western Caribbean and I have Verizon and I had signal the whole time I was on the ship It was a roaming signal and it was "Cingular at Sea".
It is true, that before you needed a satellite phone to get a signal out at sea, not anymore though.
The phone I have with Verizon is close to 2 years old. |

It depends on where you are going. Verizon will work in certain ports. For me it worked in San Juan, St. Thomas and St. Marteen. Further south in the Caribbean they have no service. |

I have cingular and had service the whole time. On the ship they advertised that you could get service with sprint and verizon also, but the people in my party with those providers were unable to get service. Also make sure you check your roaming rates prior to leaving and try to use your phone where its cheapest. For me it was $2.99 per min at sea, and about $1.39 at the ports. |

We had Cingular and it worked fine all throuh the western caribbean. All you need is a modern GSA capable phone like the RAZR which is what we had. |

I would think a Princess style phone would be appropriate.... |

virozin wont work because verizon phones dont have SIM cards as do tmoible and cingular phones. as soon as you get to international waters, your phone will say you are not in the coverage area or something of that sort. however you can still access your phonebook and stuff, just cant make phone calls.
if you need a phone, consider a prepaid phone that has a SIM card, if you do get this, you have to get your SIM unlocked by the place you get the phone from and enter in some code for the area that you are going to.
however in my opinion, you dont really need a phone on a cruise, if you are taking it with you to talk to people that are going on the cruise with you, consider walkie talkies...they work fine and are cheaper than prepaid phones. |
|

Just a friend.
 |
You need a satellite phone, normal cel phones will not work since they can't get a signal out at sea. |
