The Carnival website gives you a pretty good idea of what to expect, but really, it's all what you make of it.
The cruise boats are big and nice on the inside, lots of people, but the ship never really feels overcrowded. There's food galore (tasty too), and activities in abundance. I usually don't do a lot of onboard activities, because I'm wiped from excursions at the ports of call, but you can do anything from gambling to dancing to sauna's to games to hairy chest contests. There's a galley tour that's kind of nice, though.
I'd definitely eat in the dining rooms, as the experience is wonderful and the food delicious. You should have the chocolate melting cake for dessert at least once. To die for.
Overall, the cruise experience is rather relaxing. Lots of water and sky, and you're pretty much away from the real-world (internet/cell phones/visitors :p). They have internet on the ship, but it's a waste of your vacation in my opinion. I'd get out a deck chair, sip some tasty beverages and relax. See a show, listen to some music, enjoy the food and the view and the ports of call, take lots of pictures and go home.
The cabins are clean by the way, and apparently not small compared to other cruises, but don't expect hotel room size! Your room steward will take care of everything in your room, fold cute towel animals and leave you chocolates. You also get the same waitresses at you dinner table every evening, which is nice. It makes you feel like 'a regular' and maybe a little special...except that these people work their butts of for tips at the end of the cruise.
Carnival does a good job of getting everyone on and off the ship at the beginning and end, and also at the ports of call, by the way.
I haven't been to Mexico, but I assume the cruise experience in general is the same.
In general, staff is friendly and helpful. The ships are clean and easy to get around. There are lots of activities to be done, lots of shows and things to be seen, and lots of food to be consumed. You can decide how stimulated, drunk, social, tired, relaxed, envigorated, whatever you want to be. Guests range from kids to elderly...something for everyone.
Well, I hope this is enough information... there are so many ways to look at a cruise and everyone's experience is different! |

I've taken that specific cruise three times in the past 10 years. Twice with Carnival, and lastly with Royal Caribbean. I enjoyed them all. Carnival has more of a party crowd while Royal is more reserved. I liked the food better on Carnival but the service of Royal. Either one you can't go wrong.
The rooms are cramped unless you get a suite. The larger suites with a balcony are great but cost a lot more. If you plan on staying in your room a lot, opt for the larger cabin or at least one with a window.
There are plenty of activities. Food would be considered an activity as it is always available. The night club is fun. The pools are usually packed. Lots of people sun-bathing. The gym is fully equipped so you can work out all of the food gorging. The shows are mediocre but entertaining. Sort of in the middle of community theater and a Vegas show.
Catalina has quaint little shops. Rent a golf cart and tour the island. It's very scenic.
My fondest vacation memories have been on those cruises. I plan to do them a bunch more times. I've gone with my wife, then we took our friends, then finally our kids. Each time we had a blast. |
