Depends on what you like. Carnival's a lot better for nightlife and a "fun" atmosphere. Royal Caribbean ships have more bells and whistles, like a rock climbing wall, and (for the newest ones) ice skating rinks and surf parks.

Also be sure to check out the specific ship. Each line has brand new big ships, and each line has ships that are older and smaller.

I have been on both many times and Carnival is better for kids and young adults they are known as the party ships but royal carribean is more upscale but is still great for ALL ages.
My Choice is: Royal Carribean

I have been on both. RC was better overall, 4 stars. Carnival 2.5 stars.

I was on Carnival Elation which had just received a $200 million makeover. Other than the cabins being bigger and nicer, RC's Monarch of the Seas was a nicer ship with a much better crew. The quality of food, service and cleaning were all better on RC.

I've been on three Carnival cruises and have two more booked. I have also been on three Royal Caribbean cruises and have two more booked. Both lines are very similar. Both lines are family friendly and attract a more active group of passengers.

Basically, based on my experience, the biggest difference between the two lines is Carnival has water slides and Royal Caribbean has rock walls.

In general I find the food on Carnival is a little better and Carnival's standard cabins are a little bigger. Royal Caribbean's biggest ships, the five Voyager class and three Freedom class ships have a lot to offer. But they also have a lot of people on them.

I cruise on both and will continue to cruise on both.

I've actually been on both (and paid for them MYSELF), and I like Carnival a lot better.

I ike disney and carnival. never been on royal but am going to in June. my hubby and I are going for our 5 year anniversary. cant wait
I took disney for grad yes parent paid to celebrate. and carn was honeymoon & we paid for that

I bet everyone who says a specific cruiseline has only been on that one line. And Daddy probably paid for it. I am not brand loyal I find out which lines are going to the places I want to see and then choose the ship with at least a 4 star rating. All lines have tired old ships.
