Great idea & sure your mother will Love it. I have siled with Holland, Norwegian & Princess & never had a single compaint. There are many great places to see & visit.
As for tickets I used a travel agent once & every cruise since (24) I booked threw the cruise line ( a travel agent either by phone or computer has to deal with the cruise line & I found by talking to many they have never been where they are sending you).
The main thing before you consider what cruise line etc. is to figure out what interests you & your mother would like to share together. You can go to AAA and asks for brochures(without being a member) and get some ideas. Every cruise line has a web page where you can see what ports they stop in, cabin selections, Resturants etc. Also every cruise line has on board activities for all age groups.
Everyone has their own likes & dislikes which is fine after all it is their vacation but, you & your mother have to go on the cruise you select.
Also depending on time of year will effect prices, number of younger children & weather.
The one thing most can agree on is that a Cruise is the best vacation for your money.

Love to cruise. Fantastic experiences - instant cruise addict (and I was pretty convinced I was going to hate it). The service was great - so far beyond expectation.

Which cruises are good? All of them, or most of them - haven't actually been on all of them. But you'll want to base your decision on your personal interests. All ships kind of have a solid base of activities that you'll find on most ships: pools, casino (except for Disney), shows, movies, etc. Then many of the ships have some activities that make them unique such as the big water slides, rock walls, ice skating rinks, etc - you'll need to dig around at what each ship offers to see which ship will be best suited to you.

I've usually gotten my tickets through a travel agent, and I shop at Legendary Journeys Travel, Gate1Travel, and VacationsToGo.

As far as destination go (if you are serious about not caring about costs) I can't even begin to pin point a best. There are so many really cool cruises. You could do the Egyptian Nile Cruise. You could cruise the Galapagos, you could go see Antarctica, you could take a longer cruise and hit tons of different stuff. You could go around the world or go Transatlantic. I'm so excited for you!!!!

Again, you'll have to take into consideration your personal interests. Are the adventurous type? (try Latin America / South America / Antarctica cruises) Are you more interested in fine food & wine? (try the Mediterarrean cruises) Do you like nature? (try the Galapagos Islands or Alaska) Do you just want to see as much as possible? (try one of the longer cruises that hit many ports in many areas).

Shopping is half the fun. Try going into VacationsToGo and just look at all your choices. I find this website to be the best when looking at a wide range of choices - at least for the window shopping part - I haven't actually booked one through here yet.

My favorite cruise is the Aegean Sea (Greek Islands). In the Western Hemisphere it's the Eastern Caribbean. Since you are taking your mother, I think she'd like Royal Caribbean. When cruising the Caribbean, I like to start there (instead of Miami) because you get to see more islands and spend less days just sailing.

I've selected 2 cruises you might like at a website that you can also purchase them from. The price is per person, double occupancy and doesn't include air fare or tips. Upgrades would be getting a nicer room - balconies are nice to have.
