Whats the best way to book a cruise?

I was considering online somewhere like travelocity or something.
Is it really necessary to use a travel agent?

Which would you recommend?

I have ben on 25 cruises;
First & only with a Travel agent.
Next 24 directly with cruise line. Any Specials needs, cabin request are confirmed while you are talking with them plus any up grades.
Not saying all travel agents are bad but, most have never been where you want to go and they call the cruise lines and relay your requests. Dealing direct with the cruise lines once you book threw them within minutes of hanging up you recieve an email to confirm your booking and all requests.
No matter how you book your cruise ENJOY.

I would book either through an actourised travel agent or through the cruise lines web page using an credit card like visa or mastercard. Using the cruise lines service is perfectly safe (as long as you protect your computer with advecate virus protection ofc) and you can book your shore excursions, your drink package and other simular service and in most cases choice your cabin and even check in on line. It help you a lot and you dont get the extra charge from the travel agent either. Johan.

Yes I would highly suggest a good TA they can walk you thru all the steps. They will fight hard for you to get you a great room location. Bed arrangements, meals all sorts of stuff and they will see you have all your paperwork filled out and ready to go. Then you will have someone to bounce questions off of. It will not cost you more. The cruise ship pays the commission for TA's and encourages you to use them. Have a great trip your going to love it.

i would saw yopur travel agent

I have booked through a regular travel agent, an online TA, and directly through the cruiseline. If you have never cruised before, have a large group or have special needs then use a brick and mortar TA. Just make sure that they are a cruise specialist. You can still look online to see what interests you and bring that information to the TA. The more you can tell them, the better match they can make for you.

Vacationstogo.com do discounted cruises and have all the options/lines on their comprehensive website. Used them several times - very satisfied.

Do your research there, check their price and see if you can beat it! Only once were they beaten, just checked their website to give you the website details - and they've gone bust!

Just booked a 9day Mediterranean cruise, Junior suite with balcony 860USD (no flights included) - normally you would expect to pay 3-4 times that rate if ordering from cruise lines own site or months ahead!

If you know what ship you want to travel on , you can book it with them over the phone or on line. You can also go on line and check out the different lines and the size of there ships. And sometimes you get a better deal going that way, or use your travel agent. Have fun

Just an FYI - Travelocity, Expedia and Orbitz are all travel agencies.

They just spend more money advertising.

If you know what you want you can save money buying on-line at various cruise only sites. On-line agencies will offer more incentives for your bookings than a cruise line website.
If you need help then I would speak to a local travel agent.

Good luck!

DEFINITELY use a travel agent. If anything goes wrong with your trip, Who are you going to call? The owner of travelocity? WRONG! Calling a good travel agent to book your cruise will save you a lot of trouble if anything goes wrong with a flight or a mishap on the cruise itself. Also, travel agents can find deals that travelocity may not have. They will be able to recommend cruises that will suit your wants and needs.

Usually you can get onboard ship credit thru a travel agent...

JetSetWay.com
I would recommend a professional. We always use http://www.cruisesworldwide.com/. In fact, there is a 5% cash back offer on http://www.jetsetway.com. You do have to join a club for a month ($20), but you can cancel after you get your cash back.
