Black and white is very formal, but you can wear some color if you want. You should wear a bright red or green dress just to piss people off.

Black and white only means formal wear. Long dress for women and tux or a dark suit for men. I just got back from a 7 day cruise, and I saw many men and women wearing less than appropriate attire. They were still served.

It will mean just formal wear unless the cruise line has some type special activity that evening that they want guests to dress for. Some cruise lines have things like country and western evening, or CAribbean evening. I suggest that you go to your cruise line's web site and look at what they say, or call your travel agent.

No, you can wear either. If it is a black and white ball, you have to stick to the colors. If it is a black tie affair/party, then it just means it is a formal party - gowns in any color for the ladies, tuxedos for the men.

Black and White evenings are just that, white tie or white shirt, black shirt white trousers it matters not. Ladies the same, skirt,. trousers, dress as long as it is black and white, for example black dress with white accesories and shoes. Looks smart when everyone dressed in black and white at dinner.
