When someone ships something to you and you arent there to sign, how do you get the package?

If it's coming UPS or FedEx, you may want to track down the driver in your area and see if he can leave it at a TRUSTED neighbors house. If not, I don't know how long your vacation is, but as stated in prior answers, they will make 2 attempts before holding it for 7 to 10 days at their facility. If it coming VIA the Post Office, track down your letter carrier and ask him or her how you can put your mail on "HOLD" for the time you are gone. This is the safest thing to do. Your letter carrier will have you fill out a card with the HOLD dates on it and you can either have the letter carrier deliver all the accumulated mail and packages on the day you return or you can go to your Post Office and pick it up yourself. You can also go to the post office site and fill out a "Request To Hold Mail" form. It will be fowarded to your local post office and given to your letter carrier and they will begin to hold your mail on the date requested.

they take it back to the local ups and then you have to call them and reschedule the drop off of your item

They will leave a notice on your door saying when the next attempt to deliver is. If it is the last attempt, you call the number on the slip and you talk with the operator to see if they can either send it to a location where you are available to sign (i.e. work) or when they can re-deliver.

It depends. If signature isn't required they may leave at your door. Otherwise they usually attempt delivery 3 times and leave a note each time. The note states what your options are including information on how to pick up the package from the nearest facility.
They will send it back after 3 attempts if you don't contact them for other arraignments.

Sometimes the form they leave on the door will have a place for your signature and you just leave the form there and they will leave the package if you signed the slip.

They will leave a paper telling you to go to the post office to pick it up. You can also call the post office to find out about the package and then you can pick it up yourself.

The person who sent the parcel should have given the company your contact number so they can ring you if you're not there and arrange a time/place for you to pick up the parcel.
