Absolutely! The ships sell tours, or excursions, onboard. They plan different excursions at each port of call, usually exciting things to do in the area like, tours, shopping, scuba diving, snorkling, etc. These excursions can be pretty expensive especially scuba diving or zip-line trips. You can also go ashore on your own for free. Usually you can find a good beach within walking or short taxi ride. Local dive shops can give you a better price for snorkling or scuba trips than the cruise line. The draw-back to that is that it's not endorsed by the cruise line. Happy Sailing!

Of course you can! I've only cruised on Royal Caribbean, so I only know what their processes are.

They issue an id card to everyone, and it is scanned every time you get on or off the ship. They'll announce when they will arrive and what time they are leaving, but you are free to go wherever you want while the ship is docked. Just be sure you are back before they leave, because they will not wait for you!

Yes its a port and its part of your cruise. WE got off on ketchikan, juneau, and skagway and we all got off to shop and walk around and take tours.

Almost everywhere either by tender or on foot. Sometimes though the immediate area that the ship berths you might not want to look around (Dublin and Naples spring to mind).

There are a few exceptions where you sometimes berth in an industrial port and you have you get a bus for safety reasons but they usually run a shuttle bus where this is the case..

If a cruise ship makes a scheduled stop in a port it usually means you'll have time to get off the ship & do some sightseeing or shopping. This is what they want you to do. It helps the economy of the ports'o call. Most cruise lines give you at least 2 to 3 hours and sometimes more of free time in port.

Yes, this is one of the advantages of cruising. Instead of being cooped up in a bus, you get to walk around, swim, attend shows, sleep, eat, read ... Then when the ship arrives in port, you can you can explore the port. Also, since your "hotel" room travels with you, you only unpack and pack once - not everyday.

Yes you cam but if you don't then you can stay on the boat, as long as you are back in time it is fine before it leaves. It is great to get off the ship sometimes but yes it is totally your choose to stay or go

Yes, that is the purpose of the cruise to visit different destinations without having to fly to each one.

Sure! That's pretty much the idea. They stop in the ports that cater to tourists. You can find out what's available in that port onboard the ship. They will try to sell you excursions through the cruiseline but you can often save money by listening to their advice then taking a cab.

The correct answer is YES, except in certain countries. When you check in at the port you present your passport or other form of ID and they use that to verify who you are and then they issue you a card (like a credit card) that has your personal information on it and they take a photo of you (yes right at check in) that is imprinted on the mag strip on the card. So when you get to ports (except for certain ones) you can get on and off the ship as many times as you want. When you leave the ship you will be required to have your cruise card and they will scan it so that they have a record of you leaving. When you return they scan it again so that they have a record of you returning. In some ports you may also be required to take a photo ID, either a passport or driver's license.

When you get off the ship you can go on your own and browse or take a tour from the ship, or find a taxi or tour operator near the port and go on your own. Just be back 30 minutes before the ship sail time.

If you cruise to the Baltic countries you cannot get off the ship in Russia except if you are going on a tour. A few countries, like Turkey and Brazil, require a Visa and so if you do not have one you cannot get off the ship. In Turkey you can get a VISA right at the port so you can go shop. But other places you must apply in advance and pay a fee.
