We just booked a cruise and got an INSANE discount. We're going on the Freedom of the Seas Western Carb and got a fabulous room and the price was less than we would spend on a little beach getaway!!
Our cruise is in May and it's somewhat short notice, but enough time to make it work.

Sometimes if you book far ahead or even last minute, you can really save a bundle! Also there are times of year that are cheaper than others. Sometimes prices change drastically from one week to the next. That's why you should have a travel agent.

I wouldn't book on line! You should go to a travel agent, AAA has always been great for me. It's better to have a contact person for questions or problems. Plus they are able to advise you about good deals and suggestions to make your vacation great.

I would highly recommend Royal Caribbean above the other cruise lines. I've been on many and no one compares to them!

A good site to search for cruise info is www.vacationstogo.com

You can search by the closest port, by cruise line or destination.

Notable...most of the "quotes" you get on line don't include port taxes and fees. Add about $75-100 per person to the quote or make sure that when you get your quote, to specifically ask about those fees up front.

You can find out about each cruises "recommended tips" by clicking on the ship info page. Carnival now has an automatic gratutiy program. They charge your on board ship account for the "recommended" gratuties the moment you step on board. Usually $10 per day/per person.

Carnival is probably the most economical but is also a party boat. Lots of young people having a loud, good time. Many families and lots of children.

So, if your Mom is looking for something quite and more up scale, consider Royal Caribbean or Princess.

In regards to selecting a cabin, you usually only shower, change clothes and sleep there. A balcony is nice but not necessarily worth the extra money.

I am a cruise specialist with Cruises Inc and would be more than happy to offer you the best deal on a cruise. It is true that most cruise lines do not allow agents to discount anymore, but most of the ones who are discounting do not want to do anything to help you after you book with them. Cruises Inc's moto is "Service after the sale" so I will be at your service from the time you book the cruise until you return. I would recommend either Princess or Celebrity cruises for a wonderful and relaxing cruise, and Carinval for a great time with lots of "fun". If you would like to speak to me about this more please call 888-556-2974 or e-mail me. mfurgurson@cruisesinc.com

Hi, go to takeadip.biz and go in the left hand side to view coastal profile and then click on level 1 or level2 and those give you some good ideas about the travel package offered. A life time of vacationing for pennies on the dollar.

Try this site: iBtraveling.com I usually find a good deal there. As for taking mom on a cruise...I'd suggest RC or Norwegian. I just heard from my dad that Costa had long lines getting back onto the ship from an island, like two hours long! I never had trouble with RC or Norwegian, that's why I mentioned them. Carnival would be for anyone under say 60, otherwise, go for any of the others. Two weeks before you set sail, call the cruise line directly to see if there are any free upgrades. Make sure you get a room with a window, but it doesn't matter what floor, they're all the same. Go for the bottom...then get the free upgrade. This will be the cheapest. Try for the middle of the ship on that floor too, incase it rocks in the waves....like if you were to hold a pencil between your fingers and rock it back and forth...

Sounds like fun...you'll both have a blast and lots of memories when you return home.

Bill in Kansas
The first answer is DEAD WRONG!

I am going on my 12th cruise this August and as always got a huge discount on the pricing.

Here is the secret:

1. Look around the internet travel sites and find the ship and sailing date that you want to take.

2. log on to Cruisecompete.com and set up a free account

3. Request a quote from cruisecompete for the ship and sailing date

You will get a bunch of quotes back, but don't be in a hurry. The one you want to wait for will come froma company named Cruise-N-More (Canada based). They are always cheaper and the price will include all of the garbage fees that the other sites don't include - like taxes and port fees.

I promise this works

And before I get acused -- no I don't work for Cruises-N-More or cruise compete or anyone else in the business. I am a car dealer in Wichita Kansas, but I cruise nearly every year.

Carnival has some great deals depending on what time of the year you want to go. Got to carnival.com or call them 1-800-819-3902 .

Unfortunately, about a year or two ago most of the cruise lines discontinued allowing travel agents to discount prices or even offer rebates, so, the best thing you can do is see what agency is going to offer you some onboard perks (like onboard credit or free insurance or something similar) and more importantly the agency that "gets" you. Some agencies just push what they have on their specials board and never listen to what you really want.

I'd suggest doing a lot of research online.

try this website http://www.ytbtravel.com/davidmartey
they have some really good prices
