on most ships the cabins for crew are on the lower decks. most passenger ships have deck 3 or 4 as there lowest deck, then the crew cabins are lower than that. most of the senior officers live in the deck where the bridge is. deck 10 or 11. generally crew live 2 per cabin, but some of the newer ships have 4 berths. but there much larger. sometimes refered to by crew as"the palace" because of there size. just rmember crew "choose" to wokr on ships, there no dragged kicking and screamingto work onthem. so people who say its hard, do so becasue they haven't ever worked on one. a 10 - 12 hour day is typical of most people who work on a ship. and contracts normally range form 6 - 10 months. most of the senior officers are only doing 4 or 5 month contracts. the newer ships have very nice cabins. with larger TV's and built in fridges and closet space. a home away form home for most crew after a long day at work. |

Hello,
I know that on Carnival, there are special (small!) rooms for the staff. They are located usually on the lower decks. They are in a staff-only area on the interior of a ship. One staff member that I was friends with pointed out where her cabin was.
I assume every cruise line is similar to this.
She also had a roommate who worked in the same department as she did. Another staff member that I met, however, worked at Camp Carnival, but her roommate was a bartender.
Hope this was helpful! |

on the very bottom decks.
It isnt all that glamorous. You sign up for a 6 to 9 month contract and work 14 hour days. Not too much play time and you arent allowed to fratranize with the passengers if you meet someone you like.
If you are a US citizen, be aware that you arent going to get all of the benefits and perks that you are used to. That is why they usually hire from outside of the US and register in Bahamas. Dont have to pay overtime, benefits, can work you so hard and there is no US law to govern that. |

In the very lowest decks of the ship [below passenger decks], in a small room with, at times, three other people. It's not as glamorous as it sounds, the pay is terrible, and the hours are long. That's why not many Americans work on cruise ships - except for the "American" Norwegian ship in Hawaii, which is widely criticized for its low level of service. |
