The mass-market lines don't "require" you to dress up. They do have formal dinners [usually two on a seven-night cruise], for which you would need to dress appropriately. But the buffet and some casual venues are available on those nights if you don't wish to dress up.
Some lines, e.g. Celebrity and Holland America to name two, are somewhat more traditional and would tend to have passengers who dress up more. But cruises are generally relaxed and casual, certainly during the day, and usually during the evening, too.
You could go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Reviews" and read comments from pros and, especially "Member Reviews", to compare the different lines and ships. |

Most cruise lines have relaxed their dressed code because they now understand it is your vacation & your money.
Norwegian - Freestyle Cruising - jeans anytime, eat anytime
Princess - jeans- dress up if you wish
Holland America - jeans are ok in buffet & bars & around ship
Most other lines no matter where you sail to are the same.
Enjoy. |

The Destiny (Thomson holidays) is brilliant, and informal, although the main restaurant prefers you to be smartly dressed, no more than you would dress to go go out for a nice meal here at home, and believe me when I tell you that it is worth making a wee bit effort because the food is amazing . but you can eat in the Lido restaurant 24 hrs and anything goes dress wise. same goes for the rest of the ship, you decide where you want to eat and drink and dress accordingly. you are spoilt for choice, and the staff are so friendly and helpful, when you go home you feel you have made lots of friends. I personally think that the Destiny is a great ship to take a first cruise, that's what we did and although we have now done a few others (med and Caribbean), I thoroughly enjoyed that one, I hope you enjoy whichever cruise you eventually decide on, and I am sure you will become hooked on cruising. We have! |

they are all very casual unless you want to pay $100 a plate and head out to the formal dinner every night. But for most dining and hanging out ont he deck, all are very casual. and you won't feel out of place in shorts, a tank and some sandals. |

To keep it totally informal, avoid Cunard and P & O both of which have formal nights when DJ's and cocktail dresses are the norm.
If you can borrow Berlitz's travel guide called "Ocean Cruising and Cruise Ships", by Douglas Ward, from your library, you will be able to settle down to some 650 pages of detailed descriptions of each and every ship and cruise line on the high seas. Included in each description is a section noting which type of passenger the ship would suit, i.e. under 30's, families, mature travellers, etc. Each ship is rated and starred, e.g. 5 star + 1851-2000 points "Outstanding luxury cruise experience... etc" down to 601-650 points "a totally forgetable cruise experience - expect a cruise that is the absolute bottom of the barrel ...etc" |

Welll on most cruises dinner is just casual but not jeans... more like a nice shirt and maybe a skirt and guys either nice jeans or slacks with a nice shirt.... then there is formal night but you don't have to eat in the dinning room on princess cruiseline they have a buffet open 24/7 and u can go to that or the unlimited pizza..... but carnival might be more casual |
