I gotta say that this is a tough question. Destination, duration, location time of year. These factors all make a huge difference as to what kind of experience you'll get even on the same cruise ship. But also the ships vary very much in atmosphere even within the same company. This can have something to do with the clientele. If you're on a cruise with some of the most difficult cruisers in the world, or maybe taking a Caribbean cruise but forgot to check that it's spring break and the boat will be fully loaded with students getting sloshed. Or maybe a transatlantic which usually fills the ship with people in the upper end of the age-scale it will definately make a huge difference.
If you want to experience the largest cruise ship in the world, you can go by tonnage or passenger capacity and pick a cruise. if you want something more, I suggest you see a travel agent about the vast possibilities there is in cruising. For example, would you like an alternative to the extreme exposure of tourism that ports in the caribbean, mediterranean, baltics and such places have endured over quite a few years now or are you more inclined to an exclusive Galapagos islands cruise? Picking your cruise shouldn't be done by company and size exclusively, but by what you want to experience, but like I said, if it's just the biggest boat in the world you wanna sail with, then you should wait for christmas-time '09. That's when RC's Oasis of the Seas will be launched, which will be the biggest cruise ship so far.
I hope you find what you're looking for, if you need any hinters or want othersuggetions based on more information, I'd be happy to give you a few pointers based on my own experiences.

Carnival: For teens, constant parties, non-stop noise, and a lot of drunks and smoking.

Royal Caribbean: A little pricier, bot not many teens, not a lot of parties, and some relaxation.

I prefer to cruise on smaller ships! I especially like Holland American.
Remember the length of the ship is how far you have to walk!
Yes there is an older group of people, but there is still a lot to do.
Be careful of sailing during the summer with the hurricanes.
I prefer to sail Nov til Feb and the fares are sometimes cheaper in Jan.
Happy sailing!

I've cruised with both and prefer Royal Caribbean. They offer more activities, have better food, nightlife and customer service. Their biggest ship is the freedom of the seas at least until the oasis comes out.

Carnival ... the Valor is amazing!!!!! So much fun!!!! You should go on a NCL ship .... they are amazing and the food is good and the staff are the best and just ignore the nasty comments they are untrue

Royal Caribbean is definitely nicer then Carnival. I went on 2 Carnival cruises two years ago, and a Royal Caribbean the year before and it was definitely a better atmosphere. The Carnival ships I went on were a little bit tacky, but the RC one was really nicet.
The Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas is the largest in their fleet and in Carnival's its the Freedom.

Hope this helps :)
