You can easily remember which side is which if you say the following: "The captain left his red port wine on the table." (left, red, port).

Starboard is the right side of the ship facing the bow. (pointy bit)
Remember this saying and you will know which side is which.
"There is no red port left."

As the others have said, starboard is the right hand side, you may also hear of the POSH club on cruises-this stands for---PORT OUT,STARBOARD HOME.Which meant the cabin situation it was best to have onboard on certain cruises.

When you are facing the bow (pointed end) the Starboard side is the right hand side and the Port side is the left hand side.

When I started sailing, I used to remember it as Starboard/Right/Green (the colour for Starboard) were all longer words than Port/Left/Red.

starboard is right, when facing the bow.

Starboard is a bigger word than port, as right is a bigger word than left.......

Starboard is on the right. The way to remember it, is just by saying "is there any port left?" (port as in drink).
So port is left and starboard is right.

An easy way to remember is - Is there any Red Port Left ?.
Port being the left side showing a Red light.

Starboard is the nautical term that refers to the right side of a vessel as perceived by a person on board a vessel and facing the bow.

As you face the Bows (pointed end....for landlubbers) the starboard side is on your left. Derives from "Steerboard" when they had a board hanging over the side at the stern(blunt end)
