You can easily remember which side is which if you say the following: "The captain left his red port wine on the table." (left, red, port). |

Remember this saying and you will know which side is which.

As the others have said,starboard is the right hand side,you may also hear of the POSH club on cruises-this stands for---PORT OUT,STARBOARD HOME.Which meant the cabin situation it was best to have onboard on certain cruises. |

When you are facing the bow (pointed end) the Starboard side is the right hand side and the Port side is the left hand side.
When I started sailing, I used to remember it as Starboard/Right/Green (the colour for Starboard) were all longer words than Port/Left/Red. |
